Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay – I mean, the name sounds almost too good to be true, right? But the moment you step onto the property, you get it. This place sits right where it should be, tucked into one of Kauai’s most stunning stretches of coastline, and they’ve somehow managed to build something that feels like it grew out of the landscape rather than being dropped on top of it.

What really got me was how they’ve woven sustainability into every corner without making you feel like you’re staying at an environmental camp. The lobby opens completely to the ocean breeze – no stuffy air conditioning blasting you in the face – and there’s this gorgeous living wall that actually helps cool the space naturally. You know what’s wild? They grow their own herbs and vegetables right on site, and you can taste the difference in the restaurant. I’m usually skeptical of hotels that tout their farm-to-table programs, but this isn’t just marketing speak. The whole place runs on solar power too, which feels pretty perfect when you’re watching the sun do its thing over Hanalei Bay every evening.

The rooms themselves strike this incredible balance between luxury and that laid-back Kauai vibe. Everything’s done in natural materials – the kind of place where you want to walk around barefoot on the polished concrete floors. The bathrooms have these rainfall showers that make you never want to leave, and honestly, the beds might be the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in (I’m picky about this stuff). But here’s the thing that really sets it apart – the sound. Most beachfront hotels, you’re dealing with pool noise or traffic from the main road. Here, it’s just waves. Constant, gentle waves that become the most perfect white noise you’ve ever heard. I actually slept better than I do at home, which never happens to me when I travel. The staff gets the local rhythm too – they’re helpful without being hovering, and they know all the insider spots for everything from the best shave ice to where the sea turtles hang out. Check-in was smooth, parking’s free (which isn’t always a given in Hawaii), and they’ve got this perfect little beach setup where you can grab chairs and umbrellas without fighting crowds. It’s the kind of place that makes you understand why people fall in love with this island and never want to leave.

  We were upgraded to a master ocean view suite, which was spectacular. The view and sounds of the ocean were the backdrop to our deeply relaxing and inspiring stay. The location is easily the most beautiful on the island. The swimming beach was fantastic and my husband was pleased to be able to snorkel right on the property every day. The breakfast and different options for food were plentiful, healthy and delicious. And the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, special and comfortable. We also enjoyed the complimentary yoga and sound bath sessions and I enjoyed a world class facial with the excellent Cindy at the spa. We loved the whole experience and will be back!

  The property is Amazing ! The staff are all very nice and accommodating. They really go all out to make sure your stay is the very best . We did the Yoga classes daily which were fantastic and took the Mai Tai making class with Johnny which was really fun . Can’t wait to go back .

  Location was lovely, fabulous views. We didn’t have a car but managed with taxis. We didn’t want the hassle of driving.
