When I first pulled up to Aaron’s cottage on Keokea Loop, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star place tucked away in Hilo. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries come in unassuming packages. This isn’t your typical hotel — it’s more like staying at a friend’s place who happens to have impeccable taste and knows exactly how to make guests feel at home.

Location & Neighborhood

The location is actually pretty brilliant, and I can see why couples rate it so highly. You’re far enough from the tourist crowds to feel like you’ve found a hidden gem, but close enough to everything that matters in Hilo. The Big Island’s east side has this laid-back vibe that’s completely different from the Kona side — more authentic, if that makes sense. I mean, you can walk to some great local spots without dealing with resort prices, and the whole area feels like real Hawaii rather than the postcard version.

The Space

The cottage itself surprised me with how thoughtfully everything was set up. My room had this cozy, lived-in feel without being cluttered — like someone actually cared about the details rather than just checking boxes. There’s a small kitchen area that’s perfect for making coffee in the morning or storing those amazing tropical fruits you’ll inevitably buy at the farmers market. The whole place feels more like an apartment than a hotel room, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to slow down and experience island life properly.

The Hilo Experience

What really makes this place work is how it connects you to the real Hilo experience. You’re close to Rainbow Falls — and trust me, go early in the morning when the light hits just right. The downtown area is walkable from here, which is rare for Hawaii accommodations. I found myself actually enjoying the slower pace instead of constantly rushing between activities. There’s something about staying in a place like this that makes you appreciate the simple things, like listening to the coqui frogs at night or watching the frequent rain showers roll through.

Honestly, I think couples gravitate toward Aaron’s cottage because it offers something most hotels can’t — genuine intimacy and connection to place. You’re not just visiting Hawaii; you’re actually living in it for a few days. The 8.5 rating makes perfect sense when you consider that this isn’t about fancy amenities or room service. It’s about waking up in a space that feels authentic, being able to make your own breakfast while planning the day, and having a peaceful retreat to return to after exploring waterfalls or black sand beaches. Sometimes the best travel experiences come from places that don’t try too hard — they just get the fundamentals right and let the location do the rest.

  Josh was very welcoming & helpful, he suggested several areas to visit. Even though it’s close to the airport, it’s not very busy so no worries about noise from there. Comfortable beds and spacious bathroom! The shared kitchen was easy to use and we found what we needed to prepare our meals & lunches to go!

  We stayed in the attached unit with one queen bed. We got in late, but the manager was very accommodating. The bed was super comfy, and the room was spacious and clean. The furniture was beautiful, sturdy, and purposeful. We loved how the beach was only a minute walk away, which was a great place to go for a dip at the end of a hot day. Make friends with your neighbors as you are in close proximity to each other and share the kitchen and laundry facilities. There are no beach views, but the location is great, and it's easy to navigate your way around, and it's not far from the airport. We'll definitely be back again.
