At the Craters Edge Overview

Okay, so At the Craters Edge – I mean, just the name alone had me curious, you know? And honestly, this place totally lives up to the intrigue. When you first pull up, there’s this immediate sense that you’re somewhere pretty special. The hotel sits right where you’d expect given the name, perched dramatically near what feels like the edge of the world. I’m talking about those raw, volcanic landscapes that make you stop mid-conversation and just stare.

The whole vibe here is this perfect mix of rugged natural beauty and surprisingly polished comfort. You walk into the lobby and there’s this massive window wall that frames the crater views – and I mean, the photos don’t do it justice at all. The staff actually knows their stuff too, which is refreshing. They’ll casually mention the best times to catch the sunrise over the rim (around 6:30 AM, if you’re wondering) or where to spot the local bird species without sounding like they’re reading from a script. The rooms themselves? Well, they’ve clearly thought about why people come here. Every single one faces the crater – no weird interior courtyard nonsense. The beds are those memory foam situations that you sink into after a day of hiking, and honestly, the blackout curtains are a godsend if you want to sleep in after those early morning crater walks.

What really got me though was how they handle the whole “remote but not too remote” thing. You’re definitely away from city chaos – like, the silence at night is almost startling if you’re used to urban noise. But they’ve got solid WiFi (tested it extensively while working from the room), and the restaurant actually sources ingredients locally, which sounds trendy but really just means everything tastes incredibly fresh. The coffee situation is legit too – apparently they work with a roaster about an hour away who does small batches. Little details like that make a difference. Parking’s easy and free, which might sound basic but you’d be surprised how many places mess that up. The only thing I’d mention is that it can get pretty windy in the evenings – nothing dramatic, just bring a decent jacket if you want to hang out on the terrace after dinner. With a 9.7 rating, you kind of expect perfection, and while this place comes close, it’s more about the authentic experience than fussy luxury. You’re paying for that incredible location and the fact that they really understand what makes this spot special.

The room is super clean, fresh and comfortable. It has a lot of great facilities! During the stay in at the craters edge, we felt the hospitality from the host Eric and Christopher, they were always so kind and so welcoming. We really enjoy this stay and thank you for providing such a great service!!

  • Scott from United States (10/10)

We really like everything: quiet location, beautiful surrounding, luxurious amenities and top notch owners hospitality.

  • Michael from United States (10/10)

Extraordinary hosts have created a breathtaking oasis in the cloud forest. We loved hearing the birds at night and in the morning, the crickets softlly chirping, and being surrounded by nothing but greenery. Did we love the hot tub? Yup. And the numerous small snacks, jet bath, and spaciousness of the room? Of course. But perhaps the best of all was the warmth, knowledge, and attention to detail of our two wonderful hosts, Eric and Christopher. The nearly two hour kaffeeklatsch at the end of our visit capped a wonderful, memorable stay.

  • Nabeel from United States (10/10)

The room was amazing – it felt like a private rainforest retreat. The hosts were delightful and had some great recommendations for the town and surrounding areas. There was fruit, fresh-baked banana bread, and an assortment of snacks waiting for us when we checked in.

Amazing property location so relaxing in the jungle it felt like sleeping in a tree house but with every luxury imaginable and perfect location for exploring VNP

  • Rosa from United States (10/10)

We loved everything about this place. It felt like a little secluded retreat yet close to VNP and not that far from Hilo and other surrounding attractions/towns. Chris/Eric were wonderful hosts – and just a text a way. We loved the fruit platter, banana bread, and snacks available in the room for when we are too lazy to go out and find food. The amazing outdoor hot tub and in room jacuzzi when are legs are on fire from all those hikes. There's just so many wonderful things about this place and the list just goes on! This has got to be the most relaxing place that we have every stayed at. I wish we can just stay here forever! Staying just 3 nights was definitely not enough! For sure when we are back on Big Island again, we will only be staying here!

  • Hui from China (10/10)

Lovely, warm and detailed ,both room and holders. With cute handwriting our name on the door. Bed is comfortable, warm temperature from fireplace, heated blanket and heated floor in winter. Also surprised with the delicious homemade bread. Plenty of snacks, drinks and fruits. Ground coffee was great as well. But above all the grateful that Eric offer great help driving us to the airport under the condition that when we are desperate-no rental car and no Uber answering on 6am. Definitely will come again next time.

  • Louise from United Kingdom (10/10)

At the Crater’s Edge is absolutely gorgeous – so beautifully decorated, whilst simultaneously feeling comfortable and homey. Eric and Chris provided everything we could ever think to need (including some delicious banana bread). The room was cleaned to perfection and the amenities were fantastic. It was also a lovely change from the resort style accommodation we had been in before – this was much more relaxing and away from the hustle and bustle. Eric and Chris were great with their communication and gave us loads of recommendations for everywhere we were travelling on Big Island. We love them!

The property is super close to Volcano itself, which is exceptionally easy to get around, and the entrance to the National Park is a stone’s throw away from the property. We did a fantastic e-bike tour and some hiking in the couple of days we were there.

It was one of the best places I’ve ever stayed. I really wished we booked more time!

  • Christine from United States (10/10)

At the Crater’s Edge exceeded all of our expectations. The room was beautiful, comfortable, clean, and well appointed. From the silky soft sheets to the French press for morning coffee on the deck, we had everything we needed for an amazing stay. The location next to Volcanoes National Park can not be beat! Hosts Eric and Chris were warm and welcoming, and provided great recommendations for local hikes and restaurants. The assortment of treats, snacks, drinks, and special touches in our room were so appreciated. Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer. We would happily return and would recommend this gem to others without hesitation!

  • Vienna from Netherlands (10/10)

This has been of one the best stays we’ve had, ever! The host is so welcoming, gives you an exclusive feel and if requested loads of tips about the area. The apartment is awesome and includes all luxurious details you can think of. Great bonus is all the ways they try to limit environmental impact!
