You know what? I wasn’t sure what to expect from a rental property at Mauna Lani Resort, but this three-bedroom spot at Kamilo really surprised me. The whole complex sits on this gorgeous stretch of the Kohala Coast where the lava rock meets these perfectly manicured greens – and honestly, the contrast is pretty stunning when you’re sipping your morning coffee on the lanai.

The house itself feels more like staying at a friend’s place than some sterile vacation rental. I mean, it’s got that lived-in comfort that makes you want to actually unpack instead of living out of your suitcase for a week. The kitchen’s properly stocked (not just the bare minimum you usually get), and there’s enough space that our group of six never felt like we were stepping on each other. What really got me though was how quiet it stays at night – you’d think being part of a resort community might mean dealing with noise, but the way Kamilo’s laid out, it actually feels pretty secluded. The trade winds do their thing here too, which saved us a fortune on air conditioning.

Here’s the thing about staying at Mauna Lani though – you’re positioned perfectly for both the resort amenities and the real Big Island experience. The beaches here (especially Mauna Kea Beach just up the road) are legitimately some of the best on the island, with that fine white sand that’s rare on this side. But you’re also close enough to Waimea that you can hit up the farmers markets and get a taste of paniolo country, or drive down to Kona for the evening without it feeling like a major expedition. The property management was pretty responsive when we had a minor issue with the pool area gate – fixed within a few hours, which honestly impressed me since rental properties can sometimes leave you hanging. Sure, you’re paying resort prices, but when you factor in having a full kitchen, space to spread out, and that prime Kohala Coast location, it actually pencils out better than cramming into hotel rooms. Just don’t expect to find this place easily on your first night – the Kamilo numbering system takes a minute to figure out, and GPS gets a little confused in these newer developments.
