Big Island Retreat Overview

First Impressions

Honestly, Big Island Retreat caught me off guard in the best way possible. You know what I mean — sometimes you book a three-star place and brace yourself for disappointment, but this spot on Kahaluu Road actually delivers something special. The property sits tucked away from the main tourist chaos of Kailua-Kona, which I appreciated immediately. There’s this relaxed, almost residential feel that makes you forget you’re staying at a hotel.

The Location Sweet Spot

Here’s the thing about this area — you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough away to actually relax. Kahaluu Beach Park is literally a few minutes’ walk, and I mean the kind of beach where you’ll see sea turtles just hanging out like it’s no big deal. The snorkeling there is incredible, honestly better than some of the more famous spots that get packed with tour groups. You can walk to decent restaurants and there’s parking that doesn’t cost a fortune, which — if you’ve been to Hawaii before — you know is practically a miracle.

The Room Experience

My room was simple but thoughtfully done, with this clean island aesthetic that doesn’t try too hard. The bed was comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the air conditioning actually worked well — crucial when you’re coming back from a day in the Hawaiian sun. What I really liked was the little lanai where you could sit with your morning coffee and actually hear the ocean. It’s not oceanfront, but you get those glimpses of blue through the palm trees that remind you where you are.

Daily Rhythms

Mornings here have this easy rhythm — you wake up, grab coffee, and within minutes you’re either on the beach or exploring the coastline. The staff knows the area well and gave me solid recommendations for local spots that weren’t in my guidebook. There’s a small restaurant nearby that serves this amazing poke bowl (ask the front desk about it), and the whole vibe is just… uncomplicated. You’re not dealing with resort crowds or feeling pressured to participate in activities you don’t want to do.

Why Guests Love It

I get why couples rate this place so highly — there’s something romantic about the low-key atmosphere and being able to discover your own little corner of the Big Island. You’re not paying resort prices but you’re getting that authentic Hawaii experience that’s harder to find these days. The retreat lives up to its name, actually feeling like a place where you can disconnect and just be present. It’s the kind of spot where you end up staying longer than planned because leaving feels like too much effort, and honestly, that’s exactly what a good vacation should feel like.

Authentic lovely hawaiian style. Loved it!

Got an upgrade for free – without asking.

Loved sitting outside at the balcony and listening to the sound of the sea while falling asleep.

The owner (haven't seen her live as it is a self check in) was very friendly and understanding. We were in contact via WhatsApp.

Stayed only one night but would love to stay there longer next time.

  • Francesca from United States (9/10)

Very quiet. Even when there were many other people on the property, we didn’t even know until we saw the cars leaving the next morning. Also, the room was incredibly spacious and had everything we could possibly need.
