The location is actually brilliant if you want to experience the real Big Island. You’re in a region which means you’re close to Kealakekua Bay (amazing snorkeling, by the way) and surrounded by actual coffee farms. I loved that couples seem to get this — they consistently rate the location super high, and I can see why. There’s something romantic about waking up in the heart of Kona coffee country. Plus, you’ve got parking right on site, which is honestly a relief when you’re exploring the island with a rental car. The nearby hiking trails and scenic viewpoints make it an ideal base for adventure seekers.

The Room Experience

My room was simple but comfortable — exactly what you’d expect from a well-run three-star place. What I appreciated most was how clean everything was and the thoughtful touches that showed someone actually cares about guest experience. The windows let in that perfect Big Island breeze, and you can actually hear the island waking up in the morning. It’s not fancy, but it’s genuine, and sometimes that matters more than thread count. Each room is thoughtfully appointed with modern conveniences while maintaining the property’s charming character.

Here’s where Coffee Garden really surprised me — the breakfast situation is actually impressive. They’ve got vegetarian and gluten-free options (which isn’t always easy to find on the Big Island), plus Asian and American choices. The breakfast-to-go option was clutch for those early morning volcano trips or beach days. I mean, you’re staying in coffee country, so obviously the coffee was excellent, but they clearly put thought into making sure everyone’s dietary needs are covered. The restaurant staff goes above and beyond to accommodate special requests.

  The place was very peaceful, gardens and yard and room. Great to be away from the tourist crowd. Not a big room but big enough. We were able to use the microwave and frig for convenience and to save money. A couple of restaurants are pretty close by. If you want to see the south part of the island, past Kona, this is a good choice. The owner is lovely, super nice.

  Breakfast wasn't available during our stay as the usual host was away. However, our host Stanley was very friendly and a great source of information about the history of Hawaii and places to visit. He took us on a tour of the garden, gave us lots of its fruit, and lent us snorkelling gear. You can watch sunset over the ocean from the lanai.

  Very cozy place surrounded by a garden which provides most of the food. The hosts are friendly and interesting people. If you're lucky, you'll get a tour through the garden, with its different fruit trees and many other insights to help you get to know the surrounding area better.

  GORGEOUS views, the entire room was practically windows to the lush greenery. The accomodation had wonderful vibes. The owners live upstairs and have two dogs and six cats, which were all very friendly (please tell Tiger I miss her).

  The Coffee Garden offers a trip back into Hawaii’s past. Simple, but comfortable rooms, with great views and garden, offer a relaxing, quiet place to stay. The fresh breakfast prepared on the deck is perhaps the island’s best value at $15!

  The location was amazing, close to good snorkeling and restaurants. The environment was very peaceful with great views of the ocean from my room. My favorite part was meeting the amazing owners and enjoying the delicious avocados from their tree.

  Very friendly people and a clean space. There is free parking and an ensuite bathroom, both not necessarily a standard on Hawaii. There is a bit of wildlife noises around comparable to the cicades in North Carolina. I was offered breakfast, but it did not workout time wise for me.
