Hotel Description
So I ended up at Colony Villas #1305 at Waikoloa Beach Resort, and honestly? It’s one of those places that grows on you. First impression walking in – it’s definitely more “comfortable condo” than “luxury resort,” but that’s actually not a bad thing. The unit itself is spacious enough that you’re not tripping over your luggage, and the kitchen setup means you can grab groceries at the Kings’ Shops down the road instead of paying resort prices for every meal.
Here’s what I really appreciated – the location within Waikoloa is pretty solid. You’re close enough to the beach that it’s an easy walk (maybe 5-7 minutes if you’re not rushing), but far enough back that you don’t get the constant foot traffic noise. The pool area gets busy around 11 AM when families start showing up, so if you want that peaceful morning swim, get there early. I mean, the trade winds help with the heat, but by afternoon it’s definitely crowded. What surprised me was how quiet the evenings were – once the day visitors clear out, it feels almost residential. The resort shuttle runs pretty regularly to the beach and shopping areas, which saves you the hassle of moving your car constantly (parking can get tight near A-Bay during peak times).
You know what sets this place apart from some of the fancier resorts? It doesn’t feel like you’re trapped in a bubble. The local vibe is still there – you’ll see families from Kona coming for weekend beach days, and the staff actually lives on the island instead of just working a season. The unit itself is… well, it’s not going to win any design awards, but everything works. AC keeps up with the afternoon heat, kitchen has what you need for basic cooking, and the lanai is where you’ll probably end up spending most evenings anyway. Fair warning though – if you’re expecting daily housekeeping and turndown service, this isn’t that kind of place. It’s more like borrowing a friend’s condo, which honestly suited me fine. The 7.0 rating feels about right – it delivers what it promises without the bells and whistles, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re spending most of your time exploring the island anyway.
Many travelers prefer to book apartments in Hawaii through local agencies that offer personalized recommendations and insider knowledge about the best locations for exploring the islands’ pristine beaches and hidden gems.
