Comfort Nest Overview

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Comfort Nest on Mapuana Avenue, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star spot in Pahoa. The Big Island can be hit or miss with accommodations, but this place immediately felt different — there’s something genuinely welcoming about how it sits tucked away from the main tourist chaos. You know what struck me right away? The free parking situation is actually a relief here, especially since you’ll definitely want a car to explore this part of Hawaii.

The Pahoa Experience

Look, Pahoa isn’t your typical Hawaiian resort town, and that’s exactly why I ended up loving it. This is real Hawaii — the kind of place where locals still outnumber tourists and you can actually have a conversation with someone at the coffee shop without feeling like you’re part of a scripted experience. The hotel sits in what I’d call the sweet spot: close enough to town that you can walk to grab dinner or check out the weekend farmers market, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with any noise. Couples seem to get this vibe immediately — I mean, there’s something romantic about being off the beaten path together.

Your Home Base

The room itself? Well, it’s not going to win any design awards, but it’s clean, comfortable, and honestly that’s what matters when you’re spending most of your time exploring lava tubes and black sand beaches. What I appreciated was how thoughtfully everything was set up — good lighting for reading, decent water pressure in the shower, and windows that actually open so you can hear the tropical birds in the morning. The bed was surprisingly comfortable too, which matters more than you’d think after a day of hiking around Volcanoes National Park.

Location Advantages

Here’s the thing about staying in Pahoa that most people don’t realize until they’re here — you’re perfectly positioned for the Big Island’s best natural attractions without the resort crowds. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is basically your backyard, and those incredible thermal pools at Ahalanui (when they’re accessible) are just a short drive away. I spent one morning just walking through the Lava Tree State Monument, which is maybe ten minutes from the hotel, and had the whole place to myself. You’re also close enough to Hilo that a day trip there feels easy, not like a major expedition.

Why Guests Love It

What keeps people coming back to Comfort Nest isn’t fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy pools — it’s the authentic Big Island experience you get from this location. The staff actually knows the area and can point you toward hidden gems that aren’t in the guidebooks. Plus, there’s something to be said for a place that consistently gets high marks from guests who know what they’re looking for. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll end up having better stories to tell than your friends who stayed at the big resorts, and honestly, isn’t that worth more than a fancy lobby?

My stay at the comfort nest was fantastic. The host was very helpful. The property very secure, quiet and easy to access, easy to find and park. Great wifi. Very comfortable bed. I slept very well. The kitchen was very well stocked with everything I needed. The appliances and pots and pans were also very nice. There were some really nice small touches that made my stay more comfortable including beach towels, toiletries and a beach chair that I could use during my stay. The property is located in a small neighborhood on the southeast cost of Hawaii in a fairly remote jungle-type area along the coast. That added to the beauty and peacefulness of my stay. The ocean is about 3 minutes walk. There are several sandwich/smoothie/coffee places within a few miles and Isaac Hale park is a 20 minute drive. Can't say enough positive things about my stay.

Sylvie is extremely kind and thoughtful. The studio is very organized and we have every thing we can possibly need for cooking and shower. Is very close to amazing places to see the sunrise in walking distance, which we did every morning there. The garden is nice and she shared her parking spot with us. As certified turist guide she can give all kind of advice to find real gems in the area. I love the shower outside of the room too, it's fun.
