The Maui Banyan sits right in Kihei, and I mean, you’re literally walking distance from some of the island’s best beach action without dealing with the absolute chaos of Wailea or Ka’anapali.

What really gets me about this place is how it feels more like staying at a friend’s really nice vacation place than some corporate hotel. The condos – and they really are proper condos, not just hotel rooms with a mini fridge – give you actual space to breathe. I’m talking full kitchens where you can actually cook (huge money saver when you’re buying groceries at Foodland instead of eating out every meal), separate living areas where someone can watch TV while others are getting ready, and lanais that… well, honestly, some have better ocean views than others, so definitely ask when you’re booking. The grounds feel tropical without being over-manicured – there’s this relaxed vibe where kids are running around the pool area and nobody’s shushing them.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me before my first stay: parking is included (thank god, because paying for parking in Maui is painful), but the units can vary quite a bit since they’re individually owned. Some owners have clearly put money into updates while others are still rocking that 1980s vacation rental aesthetic – not necessarily bad, just… authentic, I guess? The pool area gets pretty lively during the day, especially when families are around, but it mellows out beautifully in the evenings. And honestly, the location is killer – you’re close enough to walk to Kalama Park when there’s live music, you can hit up the farmers market on Monday mornings, and South Kihei Road puts you right in the mix of local food trucks and shaved ice spots that actually matter. The beach access is straightforward too, no hiking through resort lobbies or anything like that. You just walk across the street and you’re on the sand. I mean, it’s not the pristine resort beach experience, but it’s real Maui – local families having barbecues, kids learning to surf, that whole scene. If you want something that feels authentic rather than packaged, and you appreciate having your own space to spread out after long days of exploring the island, this place makes a lot of sense.
