Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking into the Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, you’re immediately struck by how it manages to feel both historic and refreshed at the same time. This three-star property sits right on Kailua-Kona’s waterfront, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The lobby has this open, breezy feel that lets you know you’re definitely in Hawaii — not some generic mainland hotel that happens to be on an island.
The Kona Advantage
Here’s what I love about this spot: you’re literally steps from Kailua Pier and the heart of Kona’s historic district. I mean, you can walk to Ali’i Drive’s restaurants and shops in minutes, but you’re also positioned perfectly for those early morning Manta Ray snorkel trips that leave from the pier. The hotel sits on what’s actually a small beach — King Kamehameha Beach — which isn’t huge but gives you that immediate ocean access that’s surprisingly rare in downtown Kona. You know what’s really convenient? There’s parking available right at the hotel, which anyone who’s driven around Kona will tell you is not something to take for granted.
Rooms and Comfort
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid Marriott property — clean, comfortable, and well-maintained without being fancy. Many of the oceanfront rooms give you those postcard views of Kailua Bay, and waking up to that vista never gets old. The air conditioning works well (crucial in Kona’s heat), and the beds are genuinely comfortable after long days exploring the Big Island. Sure, the decor isn’t going to win any design awards, but everything functions properly, and that’s honestly what matters most when you’re using your room as a base for island adventures.
Breakfast and Dining
The breakfast setup here is actually pretty solid — they do both American classics and a buffet style that includes some local touches. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’ll fuel you up properly before heading out to explore. What I really appreciate is that you’re not stuck eating every meal at the hotel — some of Kona’s best restaurants are within walking distance. Places like Huggo’s and Island Lava Java are right there, so you’ve got options ranging from casual coffee to upscale dining without needing to drive anywhere.
Why Guests Love It
The location scores speak for themselves — couples especially seem to love this spot, rating it over 9 out of 10 for romantic getaways. And I get it — there’s something special about being able to walk hand-in-hand along the waterfront, then return to your oceanfront room without dealing with resort shuttles or long drives. Recent guests consistently praise the location (rating it 9.1), and after spending time here, it’s clear why. You’re in the middle of everything that makes Kona special, from the historic sites to the vibrant restaurant scene, but you still get that beachfront hotel experience. For a three-star property, it delivers exactly what most travelers actually need: comfort, location, and genuine Hawaiian atmosphere without the resort markup.

We upgraded to Oceanfront View room, so the view from the balcony was outstanding!!! I think any other room could "slightly" change our rating.
