You know what caught me off guard about Exquisite Honokowai Palms Unit #A-7? It’s one of those places that doesn’t look like much from the outside – honestly, the complex is pretty understated – but once you’re inside, you get why it has that 9.0 rating. I mean, three stars might sound modest, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want in Honokowai.

The unit itself feels like someone’s actual home rather than a sterile vacation rental. The lanai faces west (which I didn’t realize until that first sunset hit), and you can actually hear the ocean from the living room if you open the sliding doors. The kitchen’s got everything you need if you’re planning to hit up the Honokowai Farmers Market or grab fresh fish from the local spots – and trust me, you’ll want to cook at least a few meals here because the restaurants in the area can add up fast. What I really appreciated was the parking situation – you get your own designated spot, which is huge in this part of Maui where some places leave you circling around looking for street parking. The shower has decent water pressure too, something you don’t think about until you’re dealing with that weak hotel trickle somewhere else.

The location is actually pretty perfect if you know the area. You’re walking distance to Honokowai Beach Park, which locals use more than tourists (it’s not the prettiest beach, but it’s real), and you’re close enough to Kaanapali that you can hit the fancy resorts for dinner without paying resort prices to stay there. The grocery store is maybe five minutes away, and there’s this little shave ice place that doesn’t look like much but does these amazing flavor combinations. I spent most mornings on the lanai with coffee, watching the palm trees do their thing – sounds cheesy, but it’s honestly therapeutic. The trade winds come through in the afternoons, so even when it gets warm, there’s usually a breeze. Only downside is you can hear the neighboring units sometimes, especially if people are on their lanais talking, but it wasn’t bad enough to be annoying. Just felt more… lived-in, I guess? Like you’re staying in an actual neighborhood instead of some isolated resort bubble where everything’s perfectly quiet and perfectly fake.

  The location was great. It is right across from a park/beach and near a small market. It is away from the large resorts. It is nice to listen to the waves while in the condo. The pool is a nice alternative when the ocean is too rough to be in. Plenty of space for our family of four (two adults, two kids). Linens, extra trash bags, toilet paper and soaps/shampoo were all provided.
