You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from Hale Kai O’Kihei 309 – I mean, the name alone had me wondering if I’d be able to pronounce it correctly at check-in. But honestly, this little three-star spot in Kihei surprised me in ways that those fancy resort chains never do.

The thing about staying here is that you’re actually living like someone who knows Maui, not just visiting it. Unit 309 sits right where you can hear the ocean without the tourist chaos – and trust me, that’s harder to find than you’d think in Kihei these days. The lanai faces west, which means you’re getting those sunset views that people pay twice as much for at the resorts down the road. I spent most evenings out there with a beer from Foodland (it’s literally a five-minute walk), just watching the colors change over the water. The trade winds actually reach this unit too, so even on those sticky August afternoons, you can skip the AC if you open the right windows.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets after 9 PM – apparently the walls are thicker than most condos built in the ’80s, because I never heard the neighbors. The kitchen’s nothing fancy, but it’s got everything you need if you’re planning to hit the farmer’s market in town or grab fresh fish from the harbor. Speaking of which, you’re perfectly positioned here – Sugar Beach is right there when you want calm water for the kids, but Kalama Park is close enough for when you want to watch the windsurfers do their thing. I actually discovered this amazing little coffee truck that parks near the beach access every morning around 7 AM – the kind of local gem you only find when you’re staying somewhere residential like this instead of trapped in resort bubble land. The owner, Mike, makes this incredible macadamia nut latte that honestly ruined me for regular coffee the rest of the trip. Sure, the furniture’s a bit dated and the shower pressure could be stronger, but you’re paying for location and authenticity here, not marble countertops. Plus, there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try to be everything to everyone – it just does the beach condo thing really well.

  The Location is perfect. Directly at the sea with a beautiful beach in front of you. Perfect view of sunsets from your balcony.
  And nearby is everything you need, supermarket, restsurants, shops.
  The bed is very comfortable.
  AA Oceanfront Rentals and Sales is very well organized and was very helpful. We arrived quite early and could nevertheless check in bevor the regular check in time. Thanks for that!

  We really like the location of this place. It’s ocean facing with private beach. It has lots of restaurants nearby. The unit itself was clean and everything was provided. We would like to stay again if given a chance.

  the apartment is super clean, the ocean view is amazing, 7 minutes driving to the store, 20 minutos from the Airport. the sunset view from the apartment is gorgeous. I will definitely rent this place again.
