You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hana Homestead – honestly, the name made me think it might be one of those overly rustic places where you’re basically glamping. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s got this perfect balance of feeling like you’re staying somewhere authentically Hawaiian without sacrificing the comforts you want after a long day of exploring. The property sits right in the heart of Hana, which means you’re walking distance to everything that matters in this tiny town, but it’s tucked back just enough that you don’t get the occasional tour bus noise that some of the roadside spots deal with.

The rooms themselves feel more like staying at a really well-appointed friend’s place than a typical hotel – I mean, there’s actual character here instead of that cookie-cutter resort vibe you get elsewhere on Maui. The staff clearly knows the area inside and out, which is huge when you’re trying to figure out things like which food trucks are worth the stop or when the best time is to hit the bamboo forest without the crowds (early morning, by the way, like 7 AM early). What really got me was how they handle the little things that matter after you’ve been driving the Road to Hana all day – good water pressure in the showers, actually comfortable beds, and they don’t blast the AC so you wake up feeling like you’re in an icebox. The whole place has this lived-in quality that makes sense for Hana’s laid-back rhythm.

Here’s the thing about staying here versus some of the other options in the area – you’re not just getting a place to crash, you’re getting plugged into what makes this corner of the island special. The location means you can actually walk to Hasegawa General Store when you need supplies (and you will, because dining options are limited), and you’re close enough to the black sand beach at Waianapanapa that you can go multiple times without it feeling like a production. I’ll be honest, it’s not the cheapest option around, but for what you get – especially that 8.7 rating makes total sense when you experience it – it’s worth the extra cost to not feel like you’re roughing it in paradise. Plus, staying right in Hana means you can experience the town after the day-trippers leave, which is when it really shows its true personality.

  This property is a gem in the heart of Hana. A short walk to the beach, beautiful ocean views and plenty of space for everyone to spread out! The hot tub and sauna were hits with our group as well.

  Très grande et belle maison aménagée avec soin au cœur de Hana avec une belle vue surtout depuis la terrasse à l’étage. Jacuzzi impeccable et spacieux. Nous avons adoré ! Conseils avisés de John sur l’état de la route et le fait que le magnifique parc juste à côté de Hana exige une réservation préalable. Un grand merci à la nettoyeuse qui nous a aidé à retrouver avec enthousiasme un petit doudou égaré dans les draps… pour les non americains, prises de chargement USB fort pratiques.
