Hotel Description

You know what? I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Hana-Maui Resort – honestly, the drive out there is half the adventure. The Road to Hana is no joke, with those 600+ curves and one-lane bridges, but once you actually make it to this little corner of Maui, you realize why they tucked a Hyatt property way out here. It’s not your typical resort setup where you’re fighting crowds for pool chairs. This place feels more like you’ve stumbled onto someone’s really well-appointed secret hideaway on the island’s wild eastern coast.

The whole property has this laid-back, almost residential vibe – which makes sense given it’s technically a “residence” resort. The accommodations are more like condos than hotel rooms, which I actually loved because you get real kitchens and space to spread out. Most of the units have these amazing ocean views where you can watch the waves crash against the black lava rocks below, and the sound is incredible, especially at night. Fair warning though – if you’re expecting the usual resort amenities like multiple restaurants and a spa, you might be disappointed. There’s really just one main dining spot, and honestly, you’ll probably want to stock up on groceries in Paia before making the trek out here because your food options are pretty limited once you arrive.

What really makes this place special is the location itself – you’re literally at the edge of the world here, or at least it feels that way. Hana town is tiny (I mean, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it tiny), but that’s the whole point. You can walk to Hana Bay Beach in about five minutes, and it’s this perfect little crescent of gray sand that’s usually pretty quiet except for some local families on weekends. The resort staff will tell you about the red sand beach at Kaihalulu, which is absolutely worth the short hike if you don’t mind scrambling over some rocks. Pro tip – go early in the morning before it gets crowded and the lighting is just gorgeous for photos. The whole area feels untouched compared to the rest of Maui, with actual Hawaiian families still living and fishing here like they have for generations. Just don’t expect nightlife or shopping – by 8 PM, pretty much everything rolls up the sidewalks, and that’s exactly why people come out here in the first place.

The location and grounds are perfect. Gorgeous. Makes you feel like you own a large property on the coast, as you San enjoy the views quietly. Rooms are very spacious, with generous patios, and with great views.

    everything

  • David from United States (7/10)

Location is great, but no hot tub!! The pools were cold and theirs very little to eat if you are a vegetarian. Also, they don’t use fitted sheets on the bed so every night I’d wake up on a mattress (gross)! But the location is key. Perfect spot on the Hana side of the Island

  • Audrey from Switzerland (8/10)

If you pay the lesser but still hefty price of 800 USD, you will get the old, non-renovated rooms, which are spacious and have some nostalgic charm to them, but are also in urgent need of a thorough upgrade. Otherwise, the property is stunning, with lush gardens and views of Hana, and an exquisite pool overlooking the ocean. The pancakes are your best options at breakfast.

Seaside, calm of the hotel and wild neighborhood. We had the best night here!
