Hanalei Colony Resort I-2 Overview
You know what struck me first about Hanalei Colony Resort? It’s actually tucked away on Kauai’s north shore in a spot that feels almost secret – like you’ve stumbled onto something the guidebooks haven’t completely ruined yet. I mean, this isn’t one of those massive resort complexes where you feel like cattle being herded around. The I-2 unit specifically sits in this perfect sweet spot where you can hear the ocean but you’re not getting sand blown into your morning coffee (trust me, that matters more than you’d think).
The thing about this place is it really gets what people want when they say they’re going to Hawaii to “disconnect.” There’s no TV in the rooms – which honestly freaked me out for about five minutes until I realized how nice it was to actually hear the waves and those crazy loud roosters that seem to live everywhere on Kauai. The kitchen setup is surprisingly functional too, and you’ll want to use it because driving into Hanalei town for every meal gets old fast, especially when traffic backs up on that one-lane bridge. Speaking of which, the Foodland in Princeville becomes your best friend for groceries, though their prices will make you wince a little. The resort’s location means you’re maybe ten minutes from some of the most incredible beaches on the island – Tunnels Beach is right there for snorkeling, and honestly, the sunset views from your lanai are the kind that make you understand why people move to Hawaii and never leave.
What really sets this place apart though is how it manages to feel both laid-back and well-maintained at the same time. The 9.1 rating isn’t just inflated tourist enthusiasm – the grounds are genuinely beautiful without being overly manicured, and the staff actually seems to enjoy working there, which you can tell makes a difference. The pool area has this relaxed vibe where families hang out but it never feels chaotic, and there’s enough space that you’re not listening to someone else’s kids having meltdowns. Parking is straightforward (thank god, because some places on Kauai make you hike half a mile with your luggage), and the check-in process was refreshingly simple. Look, it’s not cheap – nothing in Hawaii really is – but if you’re going to splurge on accommodation, this is the kind of place where you actually get what you pay for. You’ll spend most of your time on that lanai anyway, watching the light change over the mountains and wondering why you don’t live somewhere this beautiful year-round.
Early hotels booking in Hawaii is essential during major events like the Ironman World Championship, as accommodations fill up quickly with visitors eager to experience the islands’ renowned surfing culture and tropical beauty.

Amazing location… truly "feet" from the beach / sand. Waves constantly washing up the shore with windows all open all night… wonderful !! North shore rules. Very close to Tunnels beach (snorkeling)… walking distance.

great location. the whole north of Kauai is peaceful. but this unit I2 is just steps away from the beach (unsafe to swim there due to rough surf) and the ocean breeze that comes in is great especially when it’s hot and humid. great location
