You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hau’Oli at Waikoloa Hills #902 – the name’s a mouthful and honestly, the address situation on the booking site was pretty vague. But this place actually surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked up in the hills above Waikoloa, which means you’re getting these incredible views down toward the coast without the resort crowds that pack the beachfront properties. The drive up takes maybe ten minutes from the main Waikoloa Beach Drive, and yeah, it’s a bit winding, but that’s exactly why it feels like you’ve found something special.

The condo itself sits in unit #902, so you’re up high enough to really appreciate the scenery. What I loved most was stepping out onto that lanai in the morning with my coffee – you can see all the way to the ocean on clear days, and the trade winds actually reach you up here, which makes a huge difference when it gets hot. The interior is what I’d call “island comfortable” rather than fancy – think clean lines, decent furniture, and everything you need without trying too hard to impress. The kitchen’s fully equipped (I mean actually equipped, not just a mini-fridge and microwave situation), which saved me a fortune since eating out in this area gets pricey fast. The AC works well, though honestly, you might not need it much with those cross-breezes.

Here’s the thing about this location that took me a day or two to fully appreciate – you’re close enough to hit Waikoloa Beach Resort for dinner or shopping (there’s a Foodland down there for groceries), but far enough removed that you’re not dealing with the hustle and bustle. The Kings’ Shops are maybe a 12-minute drive, and if you want to venture out, you’re perfectly positioned between Hapuna Beach to the north and all the Kona action to the south. Parking’s never an issue, which anyone who’s stayed beachside will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The only minor thing I’d mention is that cell service can be a bit spotty depending on your carrier – not a deal-breaker, but worth knowing if you’re trying to work remotely. The Wi-Fi in the unit worked fine though. For a 3-star spot with solid ratings, Hau’Oli delivers exactly what it promises – a comfortable base camp for exploring the Big Island’s Kohala Coast without the resort price tag or the feeling that you’re just another tourist in a sea of tourists.
