When I first pulled up to 120 Hoaka Road, I wasn’t sure I was in the right place because it looks more like a well-appointed private home than a three-star hotel. The free parking right on site was a relief (you know how tricky parking can get in Hawaii), and the whole setup just felt refreshingly low-key compared to the massive resort complexes you see everywhere else.

What I love about this spot in Hilo is that you’re actually living like a local rather than being stuck in some tourist bubble. The location gets consistently high marks from guests — and I can see why. You’re close enough to downtown Hilo to walk to the farmers market on Saturday mornings, but far enough out that you get this peaceful residential vibe. Rainbow Falls is maybe a ten-minute drive, and honestly, being on the east side means you’re perfectly positioned for exploring the less crowded parts of the Big Island. Couples seem to particularly appreciate how quiet and romantic the area feels, especially in the evenings.

The Suite Experience

The room itself is where this place really shines — it’s more like having your own little Hawaiian hideaway than staying in a traditional hotel. The suite setup gives you actual space to spread out, which is something you don’t always get at this price point. I mean, the name says it all, but it’s more about thoughtful touches and genuine comfort than flashy amenities. The kitchen area is surprisingly well-equipped if you want to grab some local produce and cook something up, though I’ll admit I spent most of my time on the lanai just soaking in the tropical atmosphere.

There’s something refreshingly authentic about this place that you don’t find at the big chain hotels. The owners clearly put thought into creating a space that feels like home — well, like the kind of home you’d want in Hawaii anyway. The property consistently gets high ratings from recent guests, and after staying there, I get it. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, and there’s real value in that simplicity. The fact that it’s family-run shows in all the little details, from the local recommendations they provide to the way everything is maintained.

  Host greeted me at the entry and gave me a full tour of the accommodations. Complete privacy throughout the stay. Room stocked with lots of complimentary amenities, such as bottled waters (both room temp and cold), macadamia nuts, fresh fruit, Keurig pods, bathroom necessities, clothing steamer, etc. Check out process was seamless.
