Hotel Description
You know what really gets me about this place in Honomu? It’s not trying to be some fancy resort – it’s just genuinely comfortable in the way that actually matters when you’re traveling. The screened lanai is honestly the star of the show here. I mean, you can sit out there with your morning coffee and watch the ocean without getting eaten alive by bugs, which if you’ve spent any time on the Big Island, you know is basically a miracle.
The ocean views aren’t those dramatic postcard shots you’d get from the Kohala Coast hotels, but they’re real and peaceful – you’re looking out over the coastline toward Hilo, and on clear mornings you can see the water stretching forever. Honomu itself is this tiny little town that most people just drive through on their way to Akaka Falls, but staying here puts you right in the middle of authentic Hawaii. There’s the old general store down the road that’s been there forever, and you’re maybe ten minutes from some of the best waterfalls on the island without dealing with Hilo traffic or paying resort prices.
The house itself feels lived-in rather than sterile – I actually prefer that to those over-sanitized vacation rentals where you’re afraid to touch anything. Sure, it’s a 3-star place so don’t expect marble countertops, but everything works and it’s clean. The screened porch really makes up for any fancy amenities you might miss. I spent most evenings out there just listening to the coqui frogs (yeah, they’re loud, but you get used to it) and feeling that trade wind breeze that never quite reaches you the same way when you’re stuck in Kona. Parking’s easy – just pull up, no stress about spots or fees. Check-in was straightforward, none of that complicated lockbox drama some places put you through. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. You’re away from the main highway noise but still close enough to grab supplies in Hilo if you need them. The location actually works out perfectly if you’re planning to hit Akaka Falls early before the tour buses show up, or if you want to explore the Hamakua Coast without fighting crowds. It’s the kind of place where you can sit on that lanai in the afternoon, maybe with a beer from the local market, and just watch the weather roll in from the ocean – which, honestly, is exactly what I came to Hawaii to do.

Convenient location with practically zero traffic from Hilo to the property. The home was beautiful and located in a peaceful area. The screened patio was nice to be able to sit outside and read a book without worrying about bugs. The garden was also beautiful with lots of plants and fruit trees. Massive laundry and massive bathroom in the primary.
