Honomu Home with Screened Lanai and Ocean Views! Overview
First Impressions
The Honomu Home with Screened Lanai and Ocean Views! sits in Pepeekeo like someone’s well-kept secret — honestly, I almost didn’t want to write about it because I’d rather keep this gem to myself. This three-star property doesn’t try to be fancy, but what it lacks in marble lobbies it makes up for with that screened lanai that becomes your new favorite spot within minutes of arriving. You know what really got me? The way the trade winds flow through that space, carrying hints of plumeria and salt air that remind you you’re actually in Hawaii, not some resort bubble.
The Space and Views
The main room feels lived-in rather than sterile — I mean that in the best way possible. There’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that feels like a real home instead of a hotel showroom. But honestly, you won’t spend much time inside once you discover those ocean views from the lanai. I found myself out there with my morning coffee, watching the waves crash against the rocky coastline below, and suddenly understanding why couples rate this place so highly for romantic getaways. The screened-in design is brilliant too — you get all the outdoor vibes without battling the occasional Hawaiian rain shower or curious geckos (though the geckos are actually pretty charming).
Location Perks
Pepeekeo isn’t exactly a household name, but that’s part of its charm. You’re positioned perfectly between Hilo and the famous waterfalls along the Hamakua Coast — Akaka Falls is practically in your backyard. The parking situation is refreshingly simple (no valet nonsense or hunting for street spots), and you’ll actually need that car to explore properly. What I loved most was how this location puts you right in the path of local life — there’s a small market nearby where locals grab their groceries, and you’ll feel more like a temporary resident than a tourist passing through.
The Lanai Experience
Let me be clear about something — that screened lanai isn’t just a nice feature, it’s basically the heart of this whole experience. I spent hours out there, sometimes reading, sometimes just watching the ocean change colors as clouds passed overhead. The screening keeps bugs at bay while preserving those incredible views, and there’s enough space to actually spread out and relax. During my stay, I noticed how the sound of waves becomes this constant, soothing backdrop that you don’t really notice until you’re trying to fall asleep in a city months later and missing it terribly.
Why Guests Love It
The 9.4 location rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been here — it’s that sweet spot where you feel connected to authentic Hawaii without sacrificing comfort. Couples especially seem to get it, probably because there’s something inherently romantic about sharing morning coffee while watching the Pacific stretch endlessly toward the horizon. Sure, it’s not going to wow you with fancy amenities or room service, but if you’re looking for a genuine Hawaiian experience where the natural beauty does all the heavy lifting, this place delivers exactly what it promises. Just don’t expect to want to leave that lanai very often.

Reviews of Honomu Home with Screened Lanai and Ocean Views!
Caroline from Australia (7/10)
Convenient location with practically zero traffic from Hilo to the property. The home was beautiful and located in a peaceful area. The screened patio was nice to be able to sit outside and read a book without worrying about bugs. The garden was also beautiful with lots of plants and fruit trees. Massive laundry and massive bathroom in the primary.
