Honua kai – Konea 301 Frontline with BBQ! Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in West Maui, but Honua Kai’s Konea 301 hit different – and I mean that in the best way possible. When they say “frontline,” they’re not kidding around. You’re literally steps from Kaanapali Beach, close enough that you can hear the waves from your lanai and actually see people setting up their beach chairs at sunrise (which, honestly, is pretty entertaining with your morning coffee).
The BBQ setup is what sold me though. I mean, you know how most vacation rentals have those sad little hibachis that barely work? Not here. We’re talking about a proper grill where you can actually cook dinner while watching the sunset – and trust me, after spending $40 on mediocre fish tacos in Lahaina, being able to grill your own mahi from Foodland feels like winning the lottery. The kitchen’s got everything you need too, which is clutch because let’s be real, eating out every meal on Maui will drain your bank account faster than you’d think. Plus there’s something really satisfying about making your own poke bowl on that oversized dining table while the trade winds do their thing.
What I didn’t expect was how quiet it actually gets at night – you’re close to all the Kaanapali action but far enough that you’re not dealing with resort noise until 2 AM. The unit itself feels more like someone’s actual home than a rental property, if that makes sense. The furniture isn’t that generic beachy stuff you see everywhere, and whoever decorated this place actually thought about things like having enough outlets near the bed and blackout curtains that work (small details, but they matter when you’re trying to recover from mainland jet lag). The shower pressure is fantastic too – I know that sounds random, but after a day of snorkeling at Black Rock, you want a shower that can actually rinse the salt out of your hair. Parking was straightforward, no circling around looking for spots like you get at some of the bigger resorts down the road. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend stopping at the Times Supermarket in Kaanapali before you arrive because once you’re settled in with that ocean view, you really won’t want to leave for mundane stuff like groceries.
