Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about the Ilikai? It’s this tower that honestly looks like it stepped out of 1960s Hawaii – and I mean that in the best possible way. The lobby has this retro-modern vibe that feels authentically old-school Waikiki, not like some resort trying too hard to recreate vintage charm. When you walk in, there’s this immediate sense that you’re staying somewhere with actual history instead of another cookie-cutter beachfront property.

The suites are where this place really shines, and I get why they call them luxury despite the 3-star rating. Mine had floor-to-ceiling windows that made the whole room feel enormous, plus a little kitchenette that actually came in handy for morning coffee and storing leftovers from Duke’s down the street. The building’s curved design means most rooms get these sweeping views – some facing the marina (which is surprisingly peaceful at night), others looking straight out toward the beach. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the sand, but you’re also right next to the Ala Wai Harbor if you want to watch the sunset sailboats come in.

Honestly, what I loved most was how it sits just slightly removed from the main Kalakaua Avenue chaos. You get all the convenience – the Hilton Hawaiian Village is right there, tons of restaurants within walking distance, easy access to everything – but you’re not dealing with the constant foot traffic and street noise that some of the beachfront hotels get hit with. The parking situation is pretty standard for Waikiki (meaning expensive), but at least they have valet service that’s actually efficient. One thing to note: this isn’t a full-service resort with multiple pools and activities coordinators, so if you’re looking for that all-inclusive resort experience, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you want a comfortable home base with character, solid amenities, and that classic Hawaii feel without paying Diamond Head resort prices, the Ilikai hits that sweet spot perfectly.

  Lovely, spacious room for our family of four, with two double beds, sofa bed and a good kitchen. Staff were friendly and we parked our car in a car park in the next block (cheaper than the hotel itself). We’d got off an overnight flight from Sydney and arrived hours before the supposed check-in time of 3pm. However we told the reception staff that we’d had almost no sleep and they very kindly got our room ready and allowed us to check in at noon, which was wonderful. The location is fabulous, just next to the lagoon and at one end of the stunning Waikiki beach.
