Ilikai Hotel & Luxury Suites Overview
First Impressions
The Ilikai Hotel & Luxury Suites sits right on Ala Moana Boulevard like it owns the place — and honestly, it kind of does. This three-star property has that classic Hawaiian hotel vibe that feels both retro and timeless, you know what I mean? The moment you pull up, you’ll notice the distinctive architecture that’s been a Honolulu landmark since the ’60s. What really caught my attention was how the building seems to capture that old-school Hawaii charm without feeling dated.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s the thing about location — everyone says theirs is great, but the Ilikai actually delivers. You’re positioned perfectly between Waikiki’s energy and the more local feel of Ala Moana, which means you get the best of both worlds. The beach is literally across the street, and I mean the good part of the beach where locals actually hang out. Plus, there’s parking on-site, which honestly is worth its weight in gold around here — most Waikiki hotels will charge you an arm and a leg for that privilege.
The Room Experience
The suites here are where things get interesting. My room had this massive lanai that looked out over the marina and ocean — the kind of view that makes you want to just sit there with your morning coffee and forget about your itinerary. The space itself feels generous, especially compared to some of the cramped hotel rooms you’ll find in this area. The kitchenette setup is actually functional too, not just for show, which comes in handy when you want to grab some local produce from the farmers market and make your own breakfast.
What Sets It Apart
You know what I really appreciated? The Ilikai doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s not pretending to be a resort with every bell and whistle, but it nails the essentials. The pool area has this relaxed atmosphere where you can actually find a chair (revolutionary concept, I know), and the staff seems to genuinely know the area well. When I asked about local spots, they pointed me toward places that weren’t just tourist traps. The restaurant on-site serves decent food, though honestly, with this location, you’d be crazy not to explore the incredible dining scene just steps away.
Why Guests Love It
After staying here, I totally get why couples rate this place so highly — there’s something romantic about those sunset views from your lanai, and the location gives you that perfect mix of convenience and authenticity. You’re close enough to walk to everything that matters, but far enough from the Kalakaua Avenue chaos to actually relax. The Ilikai manages to feel like a real part of Honolulu rather than just a place to crash between beach days, and that’s honestly pretty rare these days.

Lovely, spacious room for our family of four, with two double beds, sofa bed and a good kitchen. Staff were friendly and we parked our car in a car park in the next block (cheaper than the hotel itself). We'd got off an overnight flight from Sydney and arrived hours before the supposed check-in time of 3pm. However we told the reception staff that we'd had almost no sleep and they very kindly got our room ready and allowed us to check in at noon, which was wonderful. The location is fabulous, just next to the lagoon and at one end of the stunning Waikiki beach.
