Ilima Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to the Ilima Hotel, you’ll notice it’s refreshingly different from the towering resort giants that dominate Waikiki’s skyline. This three-star property sits quietly on Nohonani Street, and honestly, that’s part of its charm — it feels more like a well-kept secret than a tourist trap. The building has that classic Hawaiian apartment-style architecture, and there’s something genuinely welcoming about the scale of it all. You’re not going to find marble lobbies or dramatic water features here, but what you will find is a place that actually feels like it belongs in the neighborhood.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about where this hotel sits — you’re absolutely in Waikiki, but you’re on one of those side streets that locals actually know about. Nohonani Street puts you close enough to the beach that it’s an easy walk (we’re talking maybe five minutes), but far enough from Kalakaua Avenue that you won’t hear tour buses rumbling by at dawn. The couples who stay here consistently rave about the location, and I get why — there’s something romantic about being tucked away like this while still having everything within reach. Plus, having private parking in Waikiki is honestly like finding gold; most places will charge you an arm and a leg just to leave your car somewhere.
The Rooms
The accommodations here lean more toward apartment-style living than traditional hotel rooms, which works really well for longer stays or if you want to feel less like a tourist. Most units come with kitchenettes, which means you can actually save money by not eating out for every single meal — something your wallet will thank you for in Hawaii. The rooms aren’t going to win any design awards, but they’re clean, comfortable, and have that lived-in feeling that makes you want to kick off your shoes and stay awhile. Air conditioning works well (crucial in Hawaii), and the beds are surprisingly comfortable for a three-star property.
The Waikiki Experience
What strikes me most about staying at Ilima Hotel is how it lets you experience Waikiki without feeling overwhelmed by it. You can walk to the beach, hit up the shops and restaurants, catch a sunset at Diamond Head — all the classic stuff — but then retreat to somewhere that feels more residential. The hotel doesn’t try to be everything to everyone, which I actually appreciate. There’s no massive pool complex or endless list of activities, but sometimes you just want a good home base while you explore the island. The staff tends to be helpful with local recommendations too, and they’ll point you toward spots that aren’t necessarily in every guidebook.
Why Guests Love It
People keep coming back to this place because it strikes that sweet spot between location and value that’s increasingly rare in Waikiki. You’re getting that excellent location score for a reason — it’s genuinely well-positioned for both beach time and exploring Honolulu. The fact that couples consistently rate it so highly tells you something about the vibe here; it’s peaceful enough for romance but connected enough that you don’t feel isolated. If you’re looking for a place that feels more like staying in a local apartment than a tourist hotel, while still being right in the heart of everything, this three-star gem delivers exactly that.

Reviews of Ilima Hotel
Fiona from Canada (9/10)
The staff were absolutely wonderful and helpful, the location was convenient and the rooms spacious and well-equiped.
Yacat from Canada (9/10)
The size of the Standard Studio with Kitchen room was decent, plus you have a fully functional kitchenette to help you save a little bit on breakfasts and other meals. While the hotel is dated, it was very clean and fully functional. Location is great too, very close to main streets and places to eat. Parking spaces are pretty tight, but parking is included in your rate which is unheard of on Waikiki. Unlimited towels are provided for your beach days.
Keltie from United Kingdom (9/10)
Spacious rooms, lovely mountain view, warm staff, great location in Waikiki close to the canal and major bus routes.

The staff were absolutely lovely, the location was perfect, safe and secure, spotlessly clean, nice view, great little balcony, nice to be able to open a window. It is not a luxury hotel but it is honest.
