You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Kaanapali over the years, and unit 4104 at the Alii honestly surprised me. I mean, I was expecting another standard resort condo situation, but this place actually feels like someone’s really nice home that they happen to rent out – which, let’s be honest, is exactly what it is.

The thing about Kaanapali Alii is the location is just ridiculous in the best way possible. You’re literally on one of the best stretches of beach on the west side, but you’re not dealing with the chaos of the Hyatt or Westin crowds. It’s sort of tucked between the heavy tourist action and the more residential areas, so you get this perfect middle ground. I could walk to Whalers Village in like five minutes when I wanted decent coffee (that Starbucks gets busy around 8 AM, fair warning), but I could also head north toward Napili when I wanted something quieter. The snorkeling right out front is actually pretty solid too – nothing like Molokini, but you’ll see turtles without having to work for it.

What really got me about 4104 specifically was how well it’s set up for actually living there, not just existing in vacation mode. The kitchen had everything I needed to make real meals, which saved me from eating out every single night – and honestly, even though the food scene in Kaanapali has gotten way better, your wallet will thank you. The lanai faces west, so you’re getting those sunset views that everyone comes to Maui for, but you’re also high enough up that you catch some decent trade winds. I spent most evenings out there with a beer just watching the whole scene unfold – people finishing up their beach day, the snorkel boats heading back to Lahaina, that golden hour light hitting the water. The AC worked great during the day (and you’ll want it – even in February it gets warm), but honestly, once the sun started setting, I barely needed it.

Check-in was smooth, parking was never an issue, and the building itself feels well-maintained without being stuffy. You’ve got that classic 80s Hawaii condo vibe, but everything’s been updated where it counts. The beach access is key here – you just walk down, grab your spot, and you’re set. No reserving chairs or dealing with resort politics. I will say the trade winds can pick up in the afternoons, so if you’re planning to spend the whole day on the beach, maybe bring something to weigh down your stuff.

Look, if you’re trying to decide between this and one of the big resorts, it really comes down to what you want. You won’t have room service or a concierge, but you also won’t have crowds of people taking selfies in your relaxation space. The 9.0 rating makes total sense to me – it delivers exactly what it promises without any weird surprises. It’s that sweet spot where you feel like you’re living in Maui for a week instead of just visiting it.
