Keaau Home – 34 Mi to Volcanoes NP, Near Hilo Overview
You know what’s funny about the Keaau Home? Most people zoom right past this little town on their way to Volcano National Park without giving it a second thought, but honestly, staying here turned out to be one of those happy accidents that made the whole Big Island trip better. I mean, sure, it’s a solid 34-mile drive to see Pele’s handiwork at the volcano, but that drive through the Puna district — with all those wild orchid farms and steam vents randomly appearing by the roadside — actually became part of the adventure.
The place itself has that lived-in Hawaii vibe that’s getting harder to find these days. It’s not fancy (we’re talking 3 stars here), but there’s something refreshing about a spot that doesn’t try to be a resort. The owners clearly know their stuff about what travelers actually need — decent Wi-Fi for uploading all those lava photos, a kitchen setup that works if you want to cook some of that incredible local fish from Hilo Bay, and parking that doesn’t involve circling the block five times. Speaking of Hilo, being this close to town was actually clutch. You can hit the farmers market on Saturday mornings (get there early for the best fruit), grab supplies at KTA Super Store, or just wander around downtown without dealing with resort crowds. The whole Keaau area has this authentic local feel where you’ll hear more pidgin than mainland accents, which I loved.
What really sold me on this spot was the location strategy, if that makes sense. Yeah, you’re not walking to black sand beaches or sleeping next to crater views, but you’re positioned perfectly for day trips without paying resort prices. Thirty-four miles to Volcanoes National Park sounds like a lot until you realize you’ll want to get there early anyway to beat the tour buses, and coming back to Keaau in the evening means you can actually find a decent place to eat (try L&L Hawaiian Barbecue — locals know) instead of overpriced hotel food. Plus, if you want to explore the Hilo side — Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls, maybe even brave the road to Waipio Valley — you’re already on the right side of the island. The 8.0 rating feels about right to me. It’s not going to wow you with marble bathrooms or infinity pools, but it delivers on the stuff that matters when you’re actually trying to experience Hawaii rather than just Instagram it. The kind of place where you sleep well, wake up excited about the day ahead, and don’t feel like you’re getting gouged just because you’re on vacation.
Visitors often choose Hawaii apartments over traditional hotels because they provide more space, kitchen facilities, and the opportunity to live like a local in this magnificent Pacific paradise.

I like that it was easy to find. There was enough room for 2 adults and 6 keikis. The flooring was a definite plus. We appreciate the pots/pans and cooking utensils. Having 3 bathrooms was a lifesaver too. It was a great place to stay.

Everything was great!! There were no issues. We arrived a little later than expected and entering the home was great. Only wish we could have stayed longer.
