The house sits in this perfect sweet spot on the Big Island where you’re far enough from the tourist chaos to actually hear yourself think, but close enough to everything that matters. What I love about the Kohala area – and locals will tell you this too – is how it manages to feel both rugged and refined at the same time. You’ve got these incredible views that stretch forever, and the trade winds actually work here, so you’re not constantly battling that sticky Hawaii heat. The lodge itself has this warm, lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake. Real wood everywhere, comfortable furniture that’s clearly been chosen by someone who cares about how things feel, not just how they photograph. The kitchen is properly equipped too – I’m talking good knives, decent cookware, the kind of setup where you can actually make a real meal if you want to hit the farmers market in Waimea.

Here’s the thing though – and this is where that 9.8 rating makes total sense – it’s all the little details that add up. The water pressure is excellent (trust me, this matters after a day at the beach), there’s plenty of hot water, and the beds are legitimately comfortable. No scratchy sheets or pillows that feel like rocks. The outdoor spaces are where this place really shines. You’ll spend your mornings on the lanai with coffee, watching the light change across the landscape, and honestly, it’s pretty hard to have a bad day when it starts like that. Parking’s easy, check-in was smooth, and the whole property has this quiet, peaceful vibe that makes you want to slow down and actually be present. The only minor thing – and I’m really reaching here – is that if you’re someone who needs to be walking distance from restaurants and shops, this isn’t that kind of place. But if you’re looking for that authentic Hawaii experience where you can disconnect from the noise and reconnect with why you came to the islands in the first place, Kohala Lodge delivers exactly that. It’s the kind of spot where you find yourself already planning your next visit before you’ve even packed to leave.

  This is the house you’re looking for. Everything about it is authentic and every item inside has a story. The house is clean with a well equipped kitchen and very comfortable beds. There was even a telescope. The house is better looking in person than it is in the photos. We will definitely be returning, particularly as we got engaged there! We were so happy there that we could have stayed forever.
  
  The host, Chris, was fantastic. The care he took to see we were happy and comfortable was on par was a delightful surprise. Chris provided us with food to feed the pretty white goat and with more than enough firewood to have as many cosy evenings as we wanted. When we had a box of a hundred pink roses flown in, he thoughtfully carried it inside so the blooms wouldn’t get warm and wilt. He even found us a hammock.
