Kona Bayview Inn Overview
First Impressions
You know what struck me most about Kona Bayview Inn? It’s one of those places that doesn’t try too hard to impress you — and somehow that makes it even better. Tucked away on Middle Keei Road in Captain Cook, this three-star property sits in what locals call the “real Hawaii,” away from the resort crowds but close enough to everything that matters. The building itself is modest, but honestly, you’re not here for flashy architecture — you’re here for that view and the genuine aloha spirit.
Location Magic
I mean, let’s talk about why this spot works so well. You’re perched on the slopes above Kealakekua Bay, which gives you these sweeping ocean views that change throughout the day. The drive up Middle Keei Road might seem a bit winding at first, but once you’re there, you realize you’ve found something special. It’s about 15 minutes to the Painted Church and maybe 20 to the Captain Cook Monument — close enough for day trips but far enough to feel like you’ve escaped. The parking situation is straightforward too, which I appreciated after dealing with some of the more crowded areas down by the water.
The Room Experience
My room was simple but thoughtfully arranged, with that classic island vibe that feels authentic rather than manufactured. The real star, though, is stepping out onto your lanai in the morning — the view across the bay toward the Captain Cook Monument is something you don’t get tired of. The beds are comfortable (important after long days exploring), and the air conditioning works well, which you’ll definitely want during the warmer afternoons. What I liked most was how quiet it gets at night — just the sound of the trade winds and maybe some distant waves.
Island Breakfast and Local Touches
The breakfast setup here is continental style, but they do it right with local touches that make a difference. Fresh tropical fruits, decent coffee, and they usually have some island specialties that rotate. It’s not elaborate, but it gets your day started properly before heading out to snorkel at Two Step or explore the coffee farms nearby. The staff — and this matters more than you might think — actually know the area well and can point you toward the less touristy spots that make your trip memorable.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Kona Bayview Inn — it delivers on what really matters without the unnecessary frills. That 9.6 rating makes sense when you experience the combination of location, value, and genuine hospitality. Couples seem to particularly appreciate the peaceful setting and those sunset views from the property (I can see why it’s popular for romantic getaways). You’re staying in a place that feels connected to the real Big Island, where you can wake up to ocean views, spend your days exploring authentic Hawaii, and come back to a comfortable, unpretentious base. It’s not trying to be a resort — it’s something better for travelers who want to actually experience the island rather than just vacation on it.
Early hotels booking in Hawaii is essential during major events like the Ironman World Championship, as accommodations fill up quickly with visitors eager to experience the islands’ renowned surfing culture and tropical beauty.

We really enjoyed our time here. The accommodation is away from any tourist hotspots, it feels like you're in the middle of nature and the view is fantastic. Due to the quiet location, you are always dependent on a car, but that didn't bother us, as you are travelling a lot on Big Island anyway to explore the island and are therefore dependent on a car anyway. You can them get to a supermarket and various food spots in just a few minutes. Thomas and Sharon (as well as their furry flatmates) gave us a very warm welcome. Over the course of the days, they kept giving us great tips on where to go and what to see. They even lent us the equipment for snorkelling. There are also camping chairs in the room that you can take with you, which is very useful on Big Island as sandy beaches, for example, are rather rare. Breakfast was delicious every morning and very varied. The room was well equipped and very clean.
We can highly recommend the Kona Bayview Inn, it is one of the best B&Bs we have ever stayed in.Michael from United States (10/10)
Overall, 11 out of 10. The steep driveway could be a little tricky for some people; just go slow and watch the markers and it's no problem at all. Not everything is perfect, but way better than staying in a hotel, I don't care how fancy the hotel. No fumbling with a dumb in-room coffee maker, you'll step out onto the lanai at 6:00 and have coffee ready, and just wait until you see the view and the breakfast. Aloha!

Sharon and Thomas were extremely welcoming and wonderful hosts. They were happy to give suggestions on things to do and see and graciously lent us snorkeling gear for the day. The daily breakfasts featured the freshest produce and fruits and were the highlight of our stay here.

I had the most peaceful and beautiful stay at this hotel. The sunsets were absolutely gorgeous, and the view was breathtaking. What made it even better were the friendly cat and dog who added to the charm of the place.
The breakfast options were delightful, with a variety of choices over the three days I stayed. It was a great way to start each day of my trip.
The hotel offered a range of amenities that made my stay even more enjoyable, and the hosts were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Wifi and the public area are great!
The rooms were not only spotlessly clean but also thoughtfully furnished with Hawaiian elements, creating a truly immersive experience. I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a peaceful and beautiful getaway.Pamela from United States (10/10)
