MAILAN HALE II Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to MAILAN HALE II, you immediately get that authentic Hawaii vibe — this isn’t some massive resort trying to be everything to everyone. It’s a three-star property that honestly feels more intimate and genuine than a lot of the bigger places I’ve stayed at in Kailua-Kona. The building has this understated charm that fits perfectly with the residential feel of the neighborhood, and you can tell right away that this place cares more about creating a real Hawaiian experience than flashy amenities.

The Location Sweet Spot

Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re actually in a real neighborhood on Lamaokeola Street, not stuck in some tourist bubble. It’s close enough to downtown Kailua-Kona that you can easily walk to restaurants and shops, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with cruise ship crowds every morning. The couples who stay here really seem to get it; there’s something romantic about being tucked away in this quiet residential area while still having easy access to everything. You know what’s great? You can actually hear the ocean from here, and the sunsets… well, let’s just say you’ll want to clear your evening schedule.

Your Home Base

The room setup is pretty smart — it’s more like having your own little Hawaiian hideaway than a typical hotel experience. Each unit feels spacious and airy, with those high ceilings that help keep things cool even on warmer days. I mean, the decor isn’t going to win any design awards, but it’s clean, comfortable, and has everything you actually need. The best part is probably the lanai (that’s the porch, for those not familiar with Hawaiian terms) where you can sit with your morning coffee and actually feel like you’re living in Hawaii for a few days.

The Neighborhood Experience

What really sets this place apart is how it connects you to the real Kona. You’re staying where locals actually live, which means you’ll discover those little mom-and-pop shops and local eateries that most tourists never find. There’s a genuine sense of community here — I’ve had neighbors wave hello during my morning walks, and the local knowledge you pick up just from being in this area is invaluable. Plus, parking is actually manageable here, which anyone who’s tried to park in downtown Kona during busy season will appreciate.

Why Guests Love It

Honestly, this place works because it doesn’t try too hard. The 8.3 rating makes perfect sense when you consider what you’re getting — a genuine Hawaiian experience without the resort markup or crowds. Couples especially seem to connect with the laid-back vibe and the fact that you can actually have quiet moments together without feeling like you’re in the middle of a theme park. It’s not fancy, but it’s real, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re trying to experience the true spirit of the Big Island.

No breakfast available. loved the spacious living room, the huge sofa, and parking was a plus, kitchen is well equipped except no rice cooker. close to everything in kailua town. it was easy to find via kuakini hwy.

  • Tracie from United States (7/10)

Location was good, close to many stores. The on-site host was excellent and attempted to fulfill all of our requests.

  • Laura from United States (9/10)

Nice backyard with a hammock and a place to do laundry. It was also a plus to give some love to the pet rabbit marshmallow, who often grazed in the backyard. There is no view per se, but it’s so close to a walk into downtown

Nothing. I can’t believe I am putting this review for the first time ever in my history of booking an accomodation in booking.com. I am not a picky person, I’ve booked hostels, and different star level for accomodation in booking.com. But this is the first time, it did not meet my basic standard – no musty smell, with good ventillation. It maybe different preferences, but I booked this “studio” apartment because of the good reviews, and again it failed to meet the basics.

Location and cheap. This is a studio underneath a family home. Had air con and cooking facilities. Towels included.
