You know what? Maui Kamaole surprised me. I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star property. The exterior is pretty understated, sort of tucked away in South Kihei, but that actually turned out to be one of its biggest strengths. You’re literally across from Kamaole Beach Park III (the locals just call it Kam III), which means you can roll out of bed and be on one of Maui’s best family beaches in about two minutes flat.

The whole setup feels more like a condo complex than a traditional hotel, which I mean in the best way possible. Most units have these lanais that face either the ocean or the mountains – and honestly, even the mountain views are pretty spectacular when the light hits just right in the evening. The kitchens are actually functional too, not those sad hotel kitchenettes with a mini-fridge and broken coffee maker. This matters more than you’d think because grocery runs to Foodland are easy, and eating out for every meal in Maui will drain your bank account faster than you can say “poke bowl.” Speaking of which – there’s this little fruit stand guy who sets up on South Kihei Road most mornings, and you’ll walk right past him heading to the beach.

What really won me over was how the place feels during different parts of the day. Mornings are incredibly peaceful – you hear the waves and maybe some mynah birds, but none of that tourist chaos that hits places like Wailea later. The pool area gets some good afternoon sun without being oppressive, and there’s usually a decent breeze coming off the water. Parking was never an issue (huge plus in Kihei), and the front desk folks actually know the area well enough to give you real recommendations, not just the standard tour company brochures. The 8.5 rating makes total sense once you factor in the location and value – you’re paying way less than the resort properties up the road, but you’re still steps from the same gorgeous coastline and that classic Maui sunset view. Sure, it’s not fancy, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want.
