Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection feels like stepping into a modern Hawaiian dream that actually lives up to the hype. This five-star resort sits on some of the most coveted oceanfront real estate on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, and honestly, the setting alone is worth the splurge. The open-air lobby immediately draws your eye toward the Pacific, where you can often spot humpback whales during winter months — I mean, how’s that for a check-in experience?
Location & Setting
The resort’s position along this stretch of coastline is absolutely prime, which explains why couples consistently rate the location so highly. You’re nestled between ancient lava flows and pristine beaches, with the Mauna Lani Beach Club just steps away offering some of the island’s best snorkeling right off the shore. What I love about this spot is how it manages to feel secluded while still being accessible — you’ve got championship golf courses next door and the shops at Mauna Lani within walking distance, but the resort itself feels like its own private world.
The Accommodations
The rooms here strike that perfect balance between luxury and authentic Hawaiian style without going overboard on the tiki torches and bamboo furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame those incredible ocean views, and the private lanais are spacious enough to actually use — not just admire. The bathrooms are particularly impressive, with deep soaking tubs and rainfall showers that make you want to linger. You know what really sets this place apart though? The attention to local details, like the artwork from Hawaiian artists and the use of native materials that feel genuine rather than touristy.
Dining & Activities
The resort’s restaurants showcase Hawaii’s incredible local ingredients without the inflated prices you’d expect at some luxury properties. The breakfast alone — with fresh island fruit, locally-sourced coffee, and views of the coastline — sets the tone for your entire day. Beyond the dining, you’re perfectly positioned to explore some of the Big Island’s most unique attractions. The ancient fishponds on the property tell the story of Hawaiian aquaculture, and you can actually walk among these historic sites during low tide.
Why Guests Love It
What keeps people coming back to Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection isn’t just the stunning location or the impeccable service — it’s how the resort enhances rather than overshadows the natural beauty of Hawaii. The staff genuinely knows the island and can point you toward hidden gems that aren’t in the guidebooks. Plus, having private parking might seem like a small detail, but when you’re exploring the Big Island’s diverse landscapes — from volcanic craters to coffee farms — it’s incredibly convenient to have your rental car steps from your room. This is the kind of place where you can spend your morning snorkeling with sea turtles and your afternoon sipping wine while watching the sunset paint Mauna Kea purple and gold.
