Mauna Lani Kamilo 217 Overview
Okay, so I’ll be honest – when I first pulled into the Mauna Lani Resort area and started looking for Kamilo 217, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The unit numbers aren’t super obvious from the main road, but once you wind through the property (and trust me, it’s worth getting a little lost because the landscaping is absolutely stunning), you realize you’ve stumbled onto something pretty special.
This particular condo sits in what I’d call the sweet spot of the Mauna Lani development. You’re far enough from the main resort hustle that you actually feel like you’re staying somewhere exclusive, but close enough that you can still wander over to grab a coffee or hit the beach club without planning a whole expedition. What really got me was stepping out onto the lanai in the morning – I mean, you know how some places promise ocean views and you end up squinting through palm fronds to catch a sliver of blue? Not here. The view opens up toward the Kohala Coast in a way that makes you want to just sit there with your coffee and not make any plans at all. The trade winds hit just right too, which honestly makes all the difference when you’re trying to cool down after a day exploring.
The space itself feels like someone actually lives here, not like a sterile vacation rental. The kitchen’s got everything you need if you want to cook (and you should – the fish at the Puako Bay farmers market on Saturday mornings is incredible), plus there’s this great breakfast bar where you can sit and watch the light change over the lava rock coastline. I loved that the living area opens completely to the outdoor space – those big sliding doors basically disappear, so you’re never really sure where inside ends and outside begins. The master suite is generous without being unnecessarily huge, and the bathroom has one of those deep soaking tubs that’s perfect after spending the day snorkeling at Hapuna Beach or hiking around Pu’u Wa’awa’a. Speaking of which, you’re positioned perfectly here for exploring the less touristy parts of the Big Island – Waimea’s ranch country is maybe twenty minutes inland, and some of my favorite secluded beaches are just a short drive south along the coast. The whole Kamilo complex stays pretty quiet, even during peak season, probably because it’s more of a residential feel than a party destination. Parking’s never an issue, check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and honestly, after staying here, I can’t imagine wanting to be anywhere else on the Kohala Coast.
Travelers should reserve a hotel in Hawaii at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak winter season when the islands host numerous cultural festivals and outdoor activities.

The house was lovely, in a great location with nice lawns and was clean and full of the needed amenities. We enjoyed the furniture, the art and linens, the wifi and electronics, and lots of fun jigsaws. Use of the golf cart was fun and the key to the beach was a great bonus….we were there every day as well as night snorkeling with manta rays, dinners at Lava Lava Beach Club, Brown's Restaurant at the Orchid and other beaches along the west coast. The house was so comfy and well planned that we all felt it was spacious and had a great flow.
