Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Mauna Lani Point? It’s actually one of those places where the photos online don’t quite capture the reality – and I mean that in a good way. The condos are spread across this gorgeous stretch of the Kohala Coast, and honestly, the way they’ve tucked the buildings into the landscape feels so much more natural than some of the massive resorts you’ll find along this part of the Big Island.

I stayed here twice now, and both times I was reminded why locals always recommend it over the flashier spots down the road. The units themselves are spacious – like, actually spacious, not hotel-room-with-a-kitchenette spacious. Most have these lanais that look out over the golf course or toward the ocean, and if you’re lucky enough to snag one of the oceanfront units, well… let’s just say you’ll understand why people come back year after year. The trade winds pick up in the afternoons, which is perfect because it keeps things comfortable even when it’s blazing hot elsewhere on the island. What I really appreciate is how quiet it gets here – you’re close enough to the Mauna Lani resort area that you can walk over for dinner or use their beach facilities (the beach club is actually fantastic), but far enough away that you’re not dealing with all the hustle and bustle.

The property itself has this low-key, residential vibe that I think works really well for families or couples who want to feel like they’re living somewhere rather than just visiting. There are two pools, and the one by the clubhouse tends to be where families gravitate, while the other stays pretty mellow. Parking’s never been an issue – each unit gets assigned spots, which sounds minor until you’ve stayed at places where you’re circling around looking for a space after a day at Volcanoes National Park. The only thing I’d mention is that some of the units are definitely showing their age more than others, so it’s worth reading recent reviews of your specific building if you can. Also, if you’re planning to cook (and you should, given those kitchens), there’s a Foodland in Waimea that’s about a 20-minute drive inland, or you can hit up the Kings’ Shops at Waikoloa, which is closer but pricier.

Honestly, this feels like one of those places that gets Hawaii right – it’s comfortable and well-maintained without trying too hard to impress you with over-the-top amenities. The snorkeling at nearby Mauna Lani Beach is some of the best on this side of the island, and you’re perfectly positioned for day trips up to Waimea or down to Kona. I mean, it’s not going to blow you away with luxury touches or win any design awards, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want from a Hawaiian vacation.

Hawaii hotels range from charming beachfront bungalows in traditional Polynesian style to elegant oceanfront luxury resorts and modern accommodations with panoramic Pacific views.

Spotlessly clean, nicely furnished, very comfortable bed, spacious condo, nicely laid out. Loved how quiet it was all day, just the sound of the birds, wind, waves. Everything in the condo functioned well. Appreciated the security of a gated community and really nice staff.
