Mokulē’ia Beach Houses at Owen’s Retreat Overview

First Impressions

When you pull up to Mokulē’ia Beach Houses at Owen’s Retreat along Farrington Highway, you’ll immediately understand why this three-star property has couples rating the location a perfect 10. I mean, you’re literally on one of Oahu’s most untouched stretches of coastline — the kind of place where you can walk for miles without seeing another soul. The beach houses sit right where the North Shore starts to feel wild and undeveloped, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes this spot so special.

Location & Surroundings

This part of Waialua is what locals call “the real Hawaii” — you’re about as far from Waikiki’s crowds as you can get while still being on Oahu. The recent guest rating of 9.8 for location makes total sense when you realize you’re positioned perfectly between Haleiwa’s surf culture (about 15 minutes east) and the dramatic Kaena Point trail system to the west. What I love is that you get free private parking right on site, which actually matters more than you’d think since this stretch of coast doesn’t have much public parking anyway.

The Beach House Experience

These aren’t your typical hotel rooms — you’re staying in actual beach houses that feel more like borrowing a friend’s vacation home than checking into accommodation. The sound of waves is constant here, and I’m talking about real ocean sounds, not the distant hum you get at resort properties. You know what’s great? You can literally walk out your door and onto one of the most pristine beaches on the island. The sand stretches endlessly in both directions, and during winter months, you might catch some serious surf action offshore.

What Makes It Work

The beauty of Mokulē’ia Beach Houses at Owen’s Retreat is in what it doesn’t try to be — there’s no pretense here, no manufactured resort experience. You’re getting authentic North Shore living with the Pacific as your backyard. The houses themselves are comfortable and well-maintained, though you should know this is more about the incredible setting than high-end amenities. It’s the kind of place where you spend your days exploring tide pools, watching monk seals (they love this stretch of beach), or just reading with your feet in the sand.

Why Guests Love It

That 8.2 rating reflects something important — people come here for the experience, not the frills, and they leave completely satisfied. Couples especially seem to get it; there’s something romantic about having this much natural beauty essentially to yourselves. You’re close enough to civilization when you want it (Haleiwa’s food trucks and surf shops are a quick drive), but remote enough to feel like you’ve escaped completely. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned for some of Oahu’s best hiking — the Kaena Point trail starts just down the road and offers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery you’ll find anywhere in Hawaii.

Hawaii hotels range from charming beachfront bungalows in traditional Polynesian style to elegant oceanfront luxury resorts and modern accommodations with panoramic Pacific views.

Reviews of Mokulē’ia Beach Houses at Owen’s Retreat

  • Adelaida from Lithuania (9/10)

The location is amazing! It’s few steps away from the beach with jasmines blooming outside your kitchen window. The view is amazing 360 degrees as the other side of the property is facing the mountains.
Staying here we really relaxed and felt the island chill vibe. Tike felt slower and we enjoyed every minute of it:)

  • Sunhee from South Korea (7/10)

The location was awesome, thought the owner said we cannot see the beach in the house(I booked beachfront two bedroom house), if I seat on the balcony or front door, or the livingroom, I could see the big wave out of the fence. It was awesome.

  • Lorenz from United States (9/10)

  • Maureen from United States (8/10)

The Location was what we expected .The bed was comfortable and the shower worked

  • Thomas from United States (8/10)

The best part of this property were the location and how peaceful it was. It was far from the hustle and bustle of the city and the traffic.

  • Tema from United States (8/10)

Location on the beach was terrific. People very nice and responsive . However, perhaps we should have been informed that the property is adjacent to a landing field used by the military and others. As such, the first few nights were spent listening to helicopters fly in and out literally every so many minutes.

  • Skytraveler from Hungary (8/10)

Location, location and location. And before I forget, the location of the property is perfect.
Literraly on the beautiful beach and very quiet.
Ten min drive to a nice small town with many places to eat.

  • Lucas from Switzerland (7/10)

Great location, next to the beach!
People on the property (Ruben and Bernadette) very nice and helpful.
The house has a porch, very roomy house.

  • Megumi from Switzerland (7/10)

There is beautiful beach with many turtles close by and you can see sun rise and sun set and beautiful moon every day.
There is a big kitchen with cooking utensils and fridge so if you like to cook yourself its good facility.

  • Andrew from United Kingdom (8/10)

Location! A millionaire location on the beach (White House) Sleeping to the sound of the sea. Turtles sunbathing in the break on the beach, sunset! Basically a private sandy beach. Close to shark diving and skydiving airfield.
