Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about the OUTRIGGER Honua Kai? It’s actually got this really refreshing lack of pretension for a resort this nice. I mean, you walk into the lobby and it feels upscale without being stuffy – sort of like someone’s really well-designed beach house if that someone happened to have excellent taste and a serious budget. The whole place sits right on Kaanapali Beach, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. You’re far enough north that you avoid the absolute chaos of the main Kaanapali strip, but close enough that you can still walk to Whalers Village if you want to grab dinner or do some shopping.

The suites here are genuinely spacious – I’m talking actual kitchens with full-size appliances, not those sad little hotel kitchenettes with a mini-fridge and a prayer. This matters more than you’d think, especially if you’re staying more than a few days or traveling with kids. There’s something really satisfying about being able to make your morning coffee without having to get dressed and hunt down a café. The balconies are where this place really shines though. Most rooms face the ocean, and you get these unobstructed sunset views that are honestly pretty spectacular (though I’ll warn you, the west-facing rooms can get pretty warm in the afternoon). The pools are well done too – they’ve got this multi-level thing going on with little waterfalls, and it never felt overcrowded even when the resort was clearly busy.

What I really appreciated was how they handle the whole resort experience without making everything feel overly managed. The staff knows their stuff – they’ll point you toward the good snorkeling spots or tell you which food trucks are worth hitting up in Lahaina – but they’re not constantly hovering or pushing expensive resort activities on you. The spa is legitimately good if that’s your thing, though honestly, with Napili Bay just a short drive up the coast, you might find yourself spending less time at the resort than you’d expect. Parking is included which seems obvious but isn’t always the case in Maui, and check-in was smooth – they actually had our room ready early, which after a long flight from the mainland was much appreciated. The resort gets busy during peak season (winter months especially), but it’s designed well enough that it doesn’t feel cramped. If you’re looking for that classic Maui resort experience without the mega-resort crowds or the boutique hotel price tag, this place hits a really nice sweet spot.

  We loved the locations for grills – we grilled out at lunch once and dinner twice. I loved the amenities providing us more dishwashing soap and laundry detergent and washcloths as needed. The condos were very nice and spacious. The complimentary valet was awesome.

  Location of the resort was close enough to the areas of interest and also within walking distance to local grocery stores and food trucks. The property was spaced out enough that I didn’t feel cramped and surrounded by other guests. We loved that the pools we’re never crowded, always had available beach chairs regardless in the time of day we arrived. We traveled with our 2 year old daughter that loved the shallow and pool water slide. Duke’s restaurant always serving great food – along with our kama’aina discount.
