Paia Inn Overview

First Impressions

The Paia Inn sits right on Hana Highway in one of Maui’s most charming surf towns, and honestly, you can’t miss it — the building has this weathered coastal vibe that feels authentically Hawaiian rather than resort-polished. I mean, this three-star property doesn’t try to be something it’s not, which is refreshing when so many places on the island go overboard with the tropical theme. The moment you walk up, you’re hit with that salty ocean breeze and the laid-back energy that makes Paia special.

Location & Neighborhood

You’re literally in the heart of Paia town, which means everything worth doing is within walking distance — and I actually mean walking distance, not that “short drive” nonsense hotels usually claim. The famous Mama’s Fish House is just down the road, and you’ve got Charley’s Restaurant practically next door (where Willie Nelson used to jam, if you’re into that sort of local lore). What really makes this spot work is that you’re positioned perfectly for the Road to Hana adventure — you can start early and beat the crowds, or you can use Paia as your base and take the drive in sections. The beach access is immediate too, with several surf breaks right there if you’re into that scene.

The Rooms

The accommodations have this boutique inn feel — each room is different, which keeps things interesting but means you’ll want to check what you’re booking. Some face the ocean (worth the upgrade if you can swing it), while others look toward the town. The decor strikes that balance between island casual and actually comfortable — think quality linens and thoughtful touches rather than bamboo everything. You know what I appreciated? The rooms actually stay cool, which isn’t always a given in older Hawaiian properties, and the bathrooms are nicely updated without losing the building’s character.

The Experience

This isn’t a place where you’ll find a pool or room service — the Paia Inn is more about connecting you with the real Maui experience rather than creating an artificial resort bubble. The staff genuinely knows the area and can point you toward the best local spots (they steered me to some incredible fish tacos that weren’t in any guidebook). Mornings here are particularly special — you can grab coffee from one of the nearby cafes and watch the windsurfers setting up their gear while the town slowly comes to life. It’s that authentic slice of island life that couples seem to love, which explains why it rates so highly for romantic getaways.

Why Guests Love It

The Paia Inn works because it puts you right in the middle of everything that makes this part of Maui memorable — the surf culture, the local food scene, and that unhurried pace that feels genuinely Hawaiian. You’re not isolated on some resort property; you’re part of a real community where locals actually live and work. For travelers who want to experience Maui beyond the typical tourist trail, this place delivers that connection to the island’s authentic character while still providing comfortable, well-appointed accommodations.

Reviews of Paia Inn

Property was set within a quaint, retail shopfront exterior and also had large communal spaces and convenient access to the beach. Room was clean, well-maintained and also adequately furnished for a comfortable stay.

Great location near the airport is what we needed for one night to get some rest before we went further down the island.

Paia Inn was in a Great location! The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We enjoyed sitting in the back lounge area just off the beach – wish we had time to take advantage of the "surf club".

  • Nazarii from United States (8/10)

Great location and very cool hidden garden and beach access

Fantastic location in the heart of Paia. Beautiful beach just off the back of the property. Staff was excellent.

We stayed here for only one night upon arrival in Maui so we would be closer to Haleakala for the early morning drive to the summit. The staff was welcoming and the room remarkably quiet for being on the main road (our room faced the main street). The chief reasions for the 8/10 score are that the room was small and the price of the room quite high, though we noticed on this trip to our favorite island that the prices for everything have risen markedly.

This won't be the most appropriate review for the room I booked as I delightfully received a room upgrade upon arrival for my partner & I which was brilliant. I did however look the night before at the Booking site page and saw the room I initially booked was going for much, much less that very night so perhaps I was receiving a room to match the amount I paid. The room we received was brilliant, a large four poster bedroom with large bathroom, and private decking with outdoor futon & seating. The location of Paia Inn is perfect for Maui explorers and even if you don't have a car, the town is full of dining locations, shops and the private access to the beach – though slightly treacherous so not for the faint of heart – was breathtaking. We spotted a colony of turtles on said beach all snoozing ashore and it was a highlight for our trip.

The host Sarah was very friendly and helpful, gave us a good tour to start off. the inn and outside areas are beautiful! two really cool outdoor lounge areas right in front of the beach. The room is standard but nice, and there are good amenities like coffee/tea bar, beach towels/chairs/boards. Best place to stay in Paia to enjoy the little town or to pair with driving The road to Hana.
