Private Ohana on the lush Hamakua coast with AC Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Private Ohana on the lush Hamakua coast with AC, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name alone. But once you’re actually here on the Big Island’s northeastern coast, it all makes perfect sense. This three-star property sits right in the heart of Honokaa, and you know what? The “lush” part isn’t just marketing speak — the Hamakua coast really is this green and tropical year-round.
Location & Setting
The location here is something special, and I mean that. You’re about 40 minutes from Waimea if you’re heading inland, but honestly, why would you want to leave? The property sits on Hoomau Street in a residential area that feels authentically Hawaiian — not touristy, just real island life. Couples seem to get this place (they rate the location 8.7), and I can see why. There’s free parking right on site, which might not sound like much until you’ve tried finding a spot in some of Hawaii’s busier areas.
The Space
What you’re getting here is essentially a private ohana unit — that’s Hawaiian for family, but in real estate terms, it means a separate living space that’s part of a larger property. The room comes with air conditioning, which honestly saved me during my stay since even the lush Hamakua coast can get warm and humid. The setup feels more like staying in someone’s well-appointed guest house than a traditional hotel, and that’s actually part of the charm. You get privacy but with that local, residential feel that makes you feel like you’re living here rather than just visiting.
What Makes It Work
The thing about this place is that it’s perfectly positioned for exploring the Hamakua coast without dealing with resort crowds or resort prices. You’re close enough to Akaka Falls (maybe 15 minutes by car) and the scenic drive along Highway 19 that hugs the coastline. The property itself has that 9.5 rating for a reason — it’s clean, comfortable, and the hosts clearly know what they’re doing. I found myself spending more time here than I initially planned, just because it felt so peaceful after days of hiking and waterfall chasing.
Why Guests Love It
Recent guests have been rating the location 8.8, and after spending time here, I get it completely. You’re in real Hawaii — not the manufactured resort version, but the place where locals actually live and work. The Hamakua coast has this old-plantation-town vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere on the Big Island, and Honokaa itself has a few local spots worth checking out. Plus, having your own private space with AC means you can retreat when you need to, but you’re still connected to the community around you. It’s that balance between comfort and authenticity that makes this place work so well for couples and anyone wanting to experience Hawaii beyond the typical tourist trail.

Spacious, clean, has everything you need and more like Snorkel gear, beachtowels and chairs. It also has full kitchen.
It is located in a small Village. Perfect if you want to explore waipio valley or the north east part of the island.
The owners are realy friendly.James from United States (8/10)
Room was very clean and reasonably spacious. Bed was large and comfortable. Good hot water and decent pressure. We don't like to drive over the Saddle Road at night with the fog and goats so were looking for a place to crash on our way back to Puna. This place fit the bill well at a reasonable price.

The room was exactly as expected, though the "ocean view" was over buildings. The room,en suite, had everything we needed. The kitchen unit was complete with coffee, tea, even oatmeal if we wanted to eat breakfast. We loved the bench in the front for night sky gazing (there is no light pollution there), and sitting in the morning watching the sunrise over the ocean. Beautiful! We were warned of feral roosters that might wake us but the room is well insulted.

Wonderful little spot perfectly positioned between Hilo and the Kohala beaches. This studio space is what we wish hotel rooms could be, with a comfy bed, ample table space, a kitchen that has all you need, and a spacious bathroom. Billy, the owner, was friendly and very helpful — and we appreciated the touches like the snorkel gear, beach chairs and towels, extra bathroom towels, etc.

The room is very comfortable and fully equipped. Nothing was missing and everything was organized pretty well. Easy check in, very clear informations from the landlord and possibility to park. Close to several thing on the big island and great view from outside. The possibility to parking is very appreciated and few snorkeling + beach items were provided if in need. Very nice kitchen to cook a quick dinner after an entire day out and wanting to relax.
