Pukeawe Hale Overview
You know what struck me first about Pukeawe Hale? The name alone tells you this isn’t your typical chain hotel trying to sound Hawaiian. It actually means “smoky hill” in Hawaiian, and honestly, once you’re there you get it – there’s this misty, almost ethereal quality to the place that feels authentically rooted in the island’s character. The moment I walked in, I could tell this was one of those spots where someone actually cared about creating something real rather than just slapping together another generic resort.
The thing about Pukeawe Hale is that it operates on island time in the best possible way. Check-in was refreshingly unhurried – the staff actually seemed interested in making sure I knew about the good local spots rather than just rushing through the key card spiel. My room had this perfect balance of modern comfort without losing that authentic Hawaiian feel, and I mean the real deal, not the tiki torch stereotype stuff you see everywhere. The attention to detail was impressive for a four-star place – quality linens that actually felt luxurious, locally sourced bath products that didn’t smell like generic hotel soap, and windows that opened (you’d be surprised how rare that is these days). What really got me was how quiet it stayed even when the place seemed pretty full. The layout just works well, and you’re not hearing your neighbors’ conversations or the ice machine all night.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Hawaii beyond the tourist bubble. You’re close enough to everything you’d want to see, but far enough from the crowds that you feel like you’ve discovered something special. I spent most evenings just sitting on my lanai watching the light change over the hills – there’s something about the way the mist rolls in that’s almost hypnotic. The staff clearly lives here and loves it; they gave me directions to this incredible local breakfast spot that I never would have found otherwise, and steered me toward hiking trails that weren’t packed with tour groups. With a 9.3 rating, I was expecting something good, but Pukeawe Hale exceeded that – it’s the kind of place that makes you want to plan your next trip back before you’ve even checked out. If you’re looking for authentic Hawaii with real comfort and people who genuinely care about your experience, this is it.

The location worked out perfect for our workers
Eric from United States (8/10)
Good location (very close to Volcanos National Park), relatively affordable for area. Kitchen is fully furnished. Lack of air conditioning for property is unlikely to be a problem at that location. Pheasants live in the wooded area behind the house's backyard and can be seen most mornings and evenings.

Great location, close to Hawaii Volcano National Park. The property is very well maintained and professionally cleaned/sanitized. It has everything we need during our stay. We would stay there again.
