Resort life at a low price- Ilikai Hotel Overview
First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about Resort life at a low price- Ilikai Hotel? The name pretty much tells you everything you need to know — and honestly, it delivers on that promise. This three-star property sits right on Ala Moana Boulevard, and while it might not have all the bells and whistles of the mega-resorts down the beach, there’s something refreshingly straightforward about the whole experience. The lobby has that classic Hawaiian hotel vibe from the ’70s, which I actually found charming rather than dated.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s the thing about staying in Waikiki — location is everything, and the Ilikai nails it. You’re literally steps from the beach, but more importantly, you’re at the quieter end of Waikiki where it meets the Ala Moana area. I mean, you can walk to the Ala Moana Center in about ten minutes, which is huge if you need to grab groceries or just want some serious shopping. The lagoon right in front of the hotel is perfect for families with kids — way calmer than the main Waikiki beach scene. Plus, you’re close enough to all the action but far enough away that you can actually sleep at night.
The Room Experience
My room was on the 20th floor with an ocean view, and honestly, the view alone made the stay worthwhile. The rooms are definitely showing their age — think functional rather than fancy — but everything worked perfectly fine. The kitchenette was actually more useful than I expected, especially for making morning coffee and storing leftovers from Honolulu’s massive portion sizes. The lanai (balcony) became my favorite spot for watching the sunset, and you really can’t put a price on that. Just don’t expect high-end finishes or the latest amenities.
Dining & Amenities
The hotel restaurant serves decent food, though I’d recommend exploring the neighborhood for dinner — there are some incredible local spots within walking distance. What I really appreciated was the pool area, which never felt overcrowded like some of the bigger resorts. The parking situation is pretty standard for Waikiki (meaning expensive), but at least it’s available. There’s also a small convenience store in the lobby that saved me multiple trips to find sunscreen and snacks.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to be the fanciest hotel you’ll ever stay in, but it gets the fundamentals right. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay comfortable, and there’s something to be said for a place that doesn’t try to be something it’s not. Couples seem to particularly enjoy it here — probably because you get that romantic Hawaiian sunset view without paying resort prices. If you’re looking for a solid base to explore Oahu without breaking the bank, the Ilikai delivers exactly what it promises. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
