Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Royal Kahana #319, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little condo unit absolutely delivers in ways that’ll make you question why you’d ever pay resort prices again.
The thing about Kahana is that it sits in this sweet spot on Maui’s west side where you’re close enough to all the action but far enough from the Lahaina circus that you can actually hear the waves at night. Unit #319 specifically – and I mean this – has one of those views that makes you stop mid-conversation and just stare. The lanai faces west, so you’re getting those ridiculous Maui sunsets every single evening, and honestly, that alone is worth the stay. The trade winds hit just right here too, which means you can leave the sliding door open most of the time instead of cranking the AC like you’re fighting the humidity gods.
What really got me was how the owner clearly lives here part-time or knows the place inside and out – there’s actually good coffee in the kitchen (not those sad hotel packets), the shower has decent water pressure, and they’ve got beach chairs that don’t look like they’ve survived three hurricanes. The kitchen’s fully functional too, which matters more than you’d think when you realize that even mediocre restaurant meals will run you $30+ per person on the island. I mean, the grocery store’s just down Lower Honoapiilani Road, and you can grab fresh fish right off the boats at the harbor if you’re feeling ambitious. The complex itself is older – probably built in the ’80s – but it’s well-maintained, and the pool area stays surprisingly quiet even when it’s busy. Parking’s included, which saves you the headache of hunting for street spots, and check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that resort rigmarole where they try to sell you timeshares before handing over your key.
Here’s the thing that really sealed it for me: that 9.0 rating isn’t inflated tourist enthusiasm. You’re getting legitimate value here, especially if you’re the type who wants to experience Maui without feeling like you’re trapped in a resort bubble. The snorkeling at Kahana Bay is literally a two-minute walk – no crowded beach shuttles or fighting for parking at the popular spots. You can hit up Napili Bay or even drive to Kapalua when you want to explore, but you’ve got your own little slice of coastline right there. It’s not fancy, it’s not going to impress anyone on Instagram with marble lobbies or infinity pools, but it’s real Maui living at a price that won’t make you eat ramen for the next six months. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

We loved that we did not have to have a key card to open the door. We were provided a code beforehand. We also loved that everything we needed was available for use. From kitchenware to pool items and more. The view from the balcony was simply beautiful! To be that close and be able to walk on the beach and look at the sunset. It was amazing and such a blessing. We were not too far from shopping places and restaurants.
