Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Royal Kahana, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming spots end up surprising you the most. This OUTRIGGER property sits right on Kahana Beach, and I mean *right on it* – you can literally roll out of bed and have your toes in the sand within two minutes. The building itself has that classic 1980s Hawaii condo vibe (think lanais with sliding glass doors and that slightly dated but charming tropical decor), but honestly, when you’re looking out at those West Maui mountains across the water, architectural perfection becomes pretty irrelevant.
What really got me was how locals this place feels compared to some of the mega-resorts down in Wailea. The Kahana area is sort of this sweet spot – you’re far enough north to avoid the Kaanapali crowds but still close enough to hop over to Lahaina for dinner if you want. The hotel’s pool area is nothing fancy, but it’s got these tall palms that create perfect shade in the afternoon, and there’s usually a nice breeze coming off the ocean. I actually spent more time on the beach than by the pool anyway – Kahana Beach is one of those spots where you can snorkel right off the shore without fighting through a bunch of tourists. The parking situation is surprisingly painless too, which anyone who’s stayed in Hawaii knows is not something to take for granted.
The rooms themselves are spacious – definitely more condo-style than hotel-style, with full kitchens that actually work well (I made coffee every morning and cooked dinner a few times to save some cash). The trade-off is that you’re not getting daily housekeeping or fancy toiletries, but I mean, you’re in Maui – how much time are you really planning to spend indoors? The ocean views from the upper floors are genuinely spectacular, especially at sunset when the whole sky turns that ridiculous orange-pink color that makes every photo look fake. There can be some noise from Lower Honoapiilani Road in the morning, but it’s not terrible, and the sound of waves pretty much drowns it out. Check-in was smooth, staff was genuinely helpful with local recommendations (they steered me toward this amazing poke spot in Napili that I never would have found otherwise), and the whole vibe just felt relaxed in a way that some of the fancier places don’t. For the price point and that location – seriously, you’re maybe a 10-minute drive from some of the best beaches on the island – it’s hard to beat.
Travelers should reserve a hotel in Hawaii at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak winter season when the islands host numerous cultural festivals and outdoor activities.

Our balcony was a great place to catch the Maui sunset every day. Staff was extremely diligent in keeping the common amenities clean: pool was cleaned daily and the grills were pristine despite heavy use from what seemed like every guest.

Lovely pool. Convenient location. The apartment was a studio with a king sized bed, a couch, dining area, a kitchen, laudry, and a balcony with a partial ocean view. It was a good base for a week in West Maui.
