Royal Kahana Maui by OUTRIGGER Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Royal Kahana Maui by OUTRIGGER, you immediately get that laid-back Maui vibe — it’s not trying to be the fanciest place on the island, but honestly, that’s part of its charm. This three-star oceanfront property sits right on Kahana Beach, and I mean right on it. The lobby opens up to those sweeping Pacific views that make you forget about whatever stress you brought from the mainland. You know what struck me most? How the staff genuinely seems happy to be there, which isn’t always a given at resort properties.

Location & Neighborhood

The location on Lower Honoapiilani Road is actually perfect if you want to experience the real Maui without being stuck in the Wailea resort bubble. You’re about ten minutes north of Lahaina’s historic downtown, where you can catch whale watching tours or grab dinner at some incredible local spots. Couples absolutely love it here — and I can see why. Kahana Beach is way less crowded than the famous beaches further south, so you get that intimate, secluded feeling. Plus, having private parking on-site is a huge deal because parking can be a nightmare elsewhere on this part of the island.

The Accommodations

The rooms are spacious condos rather than typical hotel rooms, which means you get full kitchens and separate living areas. I stayed in a one-bedroom unit that felt more like a beach apartment than a hotel room — complete with a lanai that looked straight out over the ocean. The décor is sort of tropical-meets-comfortable, nothing too fancy but everything you need. What I really appreciated was the washer and dryer in the unit because, let’s face it, beach days mean lots of sandy, wet clothes.

Beach & Amenities

Kahana Beach itself is the real star here. The sand is that perfect golden color, and the water stays relatively calm thanks to the way the coastline curves. I spent hours just floating around, watching the West Maui Mountains rise up behind me. The property has a decent-sized pool if you prefer chlorine to salt water, and there’s a hot tub that’s particularly nice in the evenings. The tennis court looked well-maintained, though I’ll admit I was too busy beach-bumming to actually play. What’s really nice is how uncrowded everything feels — you’re not fighting for pool chairs or beach space like at some of the bigger resorts.

Why Guests Love It

This place works because it strikes that sweet spot between having resort amenities and feeling like you’re staying at a friend’s beach house. The recent guests who rated the location so highly (8.9 out of 10) aren’t wrong — you’re close enough to everything but far enough away to actually relax. It’s particularly great for couples who want romance without the stuffiness, or families who need space to spread out. Sure, it’s not the most upscale property on Maui, but sometimes you just want a comfortable base camp for your island adventures, and Royal Kahana Maui by OUTRIGGER delivers exactly that.

Travelers should reserve a hotel in Hawaii at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak winter season when the islands host numerous cultural festivals and outdoor activities.

Our balcony was a great place to catch the Maui sunset every day. Staff was extremely diligent in keeping the common amenities clean: pool was cleaned daily and the grills were pristine despite heavy use from what seemed like every guest.

Lovely pool. Convenient location. The apartment was a studio with a king sized bed, a couch, dining area, a kitchen, laudry, and a balcony with a partial ocean view. It was a good base for a week in West Maui.
