Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Royal Kuhio 1702? It’s one of those places where the name actually delivers on the promise – those mountain and city views really are stunning, especially if you’re used to cramped hotel rooms where you’re lucky to see a sliver of sky. I mean, when you wake up in this studio and look out toward the mountains backing Honolulu, it honestly makes you forget you’re in the middle of one of the busiest tourist areas in Hawaii. The space itself is bigger than most Waikiki accommodations I’ve stayed in – and trust me, I’ve done my share of cramped hotel hopping here. It’s got that practical studio layout that actually works, where you don’t feel like you’re living on top of your suitcase for a week.
What I really appreciate about this spot is how it sits right in the thick of things without feeling chaotic. You’re close enough to walk to Kalakaua Avenue in just a few minutes (where all the main shopping and restaurants are), but the Royal Kuhio building itself is set back enough that you’re not dealing with the constant street noise that can drive you crazy in some of the beachfront places. The building’s got that older Waikiki vibe – it’s not some shiny new resort, but it’s solid and well-maintained, and honestly, the locals who work there seem to actually know the area, which makes a difference when you need recommendations. I’ve found that the 17th floor gives you just the right height to feel above it all without being so high up that the elevator rides become a thing. The morning light coming in is pretty spectacular too, especially if you’re an early riser – you get this nice mix of urban Honolulu waking up with those dramatic mountain silhouettes that remind you you’re actually on an island in the middle of the Pacific.
Here’s the thing about staying here – it hits that sweet spot for people who want to be in Waikiki but don’t need all the resort bells and whistles. The 8.3 rating makes sense because it delivers on the basics really well: clean, spacious, great views, solid location. You’re a quick walk to the beach (maybe 5-7 minutes depending on how fast you move), close to the bus stops if you want to explore the rest of Oahu, and there are actual grocery options nearby, which is huge if you don’t want to eat out for every single meal. I noticed the building tends to attract a mix of longer-stay visitors and locals, which usually means it’s a place that works for daily living, not just vacation fantasy. The only thing I’d mention is that parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this area – it’s doable, just factor in some extra time if you’re renting a car.
