Hotel Description

You know what hits you first at the Sheraton Maui? It’s not the lobby or the pool – it’s that you’re literally standing on Black Rock, this ancient lava formation that juts right into the ocean at Ka’anapali Beach. I mean, most hotels just sit near the water, but this place is practically built into it. The resort wraps around the rock like it’s been there forever, which honestly makes for some pretty dramatic views from almost every angle.

The property itself is sprawling – and I mean really sprawling – in that classic Hawaiian resort way where you’ll definitely get your steps in walking from your room to dinner. The rooms are solid four-star quality, nothing groundbreaking but they’ve got that Maui vibe down with the tropical colors and lanai views. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night, even with families around during peak season. The trade winds do their thing, and you’ll actually want to keep those sliding doors open. Parking’s included too, which saves you about $25 a day compared to some of the other Ka’anapali properties – just saying.

But here’s the thing that makes this place special: that location on Black Rock isn’t just for show. Every evening around sunset, there’s this cliff diving ceremony that happens right off the resort’s edge, and you can watch it from the beach or grab a drink at the cliff-side bar. It’s touristy, sure, but it’s also genuinely cool and rooted in Hawaiian culture. Plus, the snorkeling right off Black Rock is actually incredible – you don’t need to book some expensive boat tour when you’ve got sea turtles hanging out literally steps from your beach chair. The 8.3 rating makes sense when you factor in the whole experience. Yeah, it’s not the newest property on the strip, and the spa prices will make you wince a little, but there’s something authentic about how this place sits in the landscape. It feels less like a resort that was dropped onto Maui and more like part of the island itself.

Location, loved the wrist band key card!! Loved the daily activities- we fed the koi and made a lei. My granddaughter loved that!!

The staff were very welcoming and we were offered a selection of upgrades, but choose to remain the room we had booked. We stayed in block 4 and the ‘partial see view’ from our room was amazing. There is additional parking by this block, next to the tennis court
I highly recommend an evening or two in the Bar and Grill. The staff are lovely and helpfu, evening coulture events of music, hula dancing and cliff dive were wonderful pleasant. We had dinner in here several evenings during our stay. Grounds and gardens are spacious and very well maintained. I was one of several guests who enjoyed watching the palm trees being trimmed.
There were some guests who felt it acceptable to leave used coffee cups, towels etc. anywhere they pleased, but staff were very quick to clean up after them.
Some areas could be updated, but given the Islands, to be praised, sustainabilty goals, I am more than happy to stay in a hotel that does keep refurbishing.
