Somewhere over the Rainbow Loft with AC Hilo Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Somewhere over the Rainbow Loft with AC Hilo, you immediately get that “hidden gem” feeling — it’s tucked away on a quiet residential street in Hilo, but you know you’ve found something special. The property has this charming, local vibe that feels authentically Hawaiian without any of the touristy resort nonsense. What struck me right away was how peaceful everything felt, especially after dealing with the usual chaos of getting to the Big Island. The free parking situation is honestly a godsend here — you pull right up and don’t have to worry about hunting for a spot or paying ridiculous fees.
The Space and Comfort
This three-star loft really punches above its weight when it comes to comfort and thoughtful touches. The air conditioning works beautifully (and trust me, you’ll appreciate it during those warm Hilo afternoons), but what I loved most was how the space felt like staying in someone’s well-designed home rather than a generic hotel room. The loft setup gives you that sense of having your own little retreat, with enough room to actually spread out and relax. You can tell someone put real thought into making this place functional for travelers — there are all those little details that matter, like good lighting and places to actually unpack your stuff.
Location and Getting Around
Ululani Street puts you in this perfect sweet spot where you’re close to everything but away from any noise or crowds. I mean, you’re literally minutes from downtown Hilo’s shops and restaurants, but the neighborhood itself feels residential and calm. What’s really nice is how walkable everything becomes from here — you can stroll to local coffee spots, hit up the farmers market on the right days, or just wander around and get a feel for how locals actually live. The location gets consistently high marks from guests, and honestly, once you’re here you’ll understand why couples especially love it — there’s something romantic about having your own little hideaway while still being connected to the town.
The Hilo Experience
Staying here puts you on the right side of the Big Island if you’re looking for that authentic Hawaiian experience rather than the resort scene. Hilo has this laid-back, artistic energy that’s completely different from the Kona side, and this loft fits perfectly into that vibe. You’re well-positioned for exploring the incredible natural attractions — Rainbow Falls is practically around the corner (which makes the property name pretty perfect), and you can easily day-trip to Volcanoes National Park or the stunning Hamakua Coast. The local food scene is fantastic too, and you’ll find yourself discovering little plate lunch spots and coffee farms that most tourists never stumble across.
Why Guests Love It
With a 9.3 rating, this place clearly hits the mark for what travelers actually want — comfort, character, and a genuine sense of place. The combination of privacy, great location, and thoughtful amenities creates this perfect balance where you feel like you’re experiencing real Hawaii while still having all the comforts you need. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, which is refreshing. You get reliable air conditioning, free parking, and a peaceful base for exploring, all while staying somewhere that feels special rather than generic.
Best hotels in Hawaii blend oceanfront resort suites, open-air lanai terraces, and tropical island breakfasts before a day along the coast.

What a gem! This property was perfect! It was clean and spacious with a lovely gift of coffee and cookies on arrival. The rainbow theme throughout was really sweet and carefully thought out. Large double bedrooms with comfortable beds, a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. There were games the children could play with and although during our short stay, we didn’t use them, there was beach and snorkelling equipment provided. I wish we could have taken this accommodation with us on our travels around Big Island.
The owner was brilliant too with providing timely information about the accommodation and surrounds prior to our arrival and departure I would fully recommend this property for a stay in Hilo.Alice from United States (9/10)
The location and house set up was great. It was wonderful to be in close walking distance to the farmers' market, bakery and other offerings in downtown Hilo. We really appreciated the comfy beds, beach towels and snorkels too!
