The Great Kona Escape Overview

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to The Great Kona Escape, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name — but this four-star property on Anini Street completely won me over. The parking situation alone had me relieved (it’s free and right on-site, which is honestly a blessing in Kailua-Kona), and the whole place has this laid-back Hawaiian vibe that feels authentic rather than touristy. You know what struck me most? How quiet it was despite being so close to everything that matters in town.

Location That Actually Works

I mean, location is everything in Kona, and this place nails it. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from Ali’i Drive where all the waterfront action happens — the shops, restaurants, that gorgeous stretch where people watch sunsets every single night. But here’s the thing: you’re just far enough off the main drag that you don’t hear the traffic or late-night crowds. I watched couples strolling back from dinner looking completely content, and honestly, I get why the location scores so high with romantic getaways. The ocean views from certain spots are pretty spectacular too, especially in the late afternoon when the light hits just right.

The Room Experience

My room was actually larger than I expected — these aren’t cramped hotel boxes, that’s for sure. The decor strikes this nice balance between tropical touches and modern comfort, nothing too over-the-top or kitschy. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical details: good lighting for reading, plenty of outlets, and air conditioning that actually works (trust me, you’ll want that during Kona’s warmer months). The bathroom was well-appointed, and I loved having space to spread out my stuff without feeling like I was living out of a suitcase.

Local Insights

Here’s something most visitors don’t realize — staying on this side of town puts you perfectly positioned for both the historic Kailua Village and the newer developments heading north. I could walk to the Kona Farmers Market on Saturday mornings, grab coffee at one of those local spots that tourists never find, and still be back for a quick swim before the day got too hot. The staff actually knows the area well too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. They pointed me toward this little snorkel spot that wasn’t crowded with tour groups — exactly the kind of insider tip that makes a trip memorable.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both relaxing and connected to the real Kona experience. You’re not stuck in some resort bubble, but you’re also not roughing it or dealing with sketchy accommodations. The combination of that prime location, genuine Hawaiian hospitality, and thoughtful amenities creates something pretty special. I watched guests coming and going during my stay, and everyone seemed genuinely happy — not just vacation-happy, but actually satisfied with their choice. That 9.4 rating makes complete sense once you experience it yourself.
