THE OHANA HOUSE, Amazing Tiny Home on A Volcanic Lava Field! Overview
Okay, so first things first – when you pull up to The Ohana House, you’re going to think your GPS is broken. I mean, it literally sits on this ancient lava field that looks like something from another planet, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it so incredible. The whole landscape is just these dramatic black rock formations stretching out around this adorable tiny home, and you know what? It’s way more beautiful than intimidating once you get there.
The place itself is surprisingly well thought out for such a compact space. You’ve got everything you actually need without feeling cramped – though fair warning, if you’re traveling with someone who needs their space, you’ll definitely be getting cozy. The owners clearly know what they’re doing with tiny home design because there are all these clever little storage solutions and the layout just flows naturally. What really got me was stepping outside in the morning with my coffee and just… silence. Well, except for the wind moving through the lava rock, which creates this almost musical sound that’s hard to describe. It’s meditative, honestly.
The volcanic setting isn’t just for show either – there’s actually some fascinating geology stuff happening here if you’re into that sort of thing, and even if you’re not, it makes for incredible photos. The sunsets are absolutely ridiculous because there’s nothing blocking the horizon, just this vast expanse of textured black rock that catches the light in the most unexpected ways. Parking is straightforward (just pull right up), and the check-in process was smooth – they leave you detailed instructions since it’s pretty remote. Speaking of remote, make sure you stock up on groceries beforehand because you’re not exactly walking to a corner store from here. The isolation is the whole point though, and after a day or two, you’ll find yourself completely unwinding in a way that’s hard to achieve at typical hotels. It’s one of those places where the unique location becomes part of the experience rather than just a backdrop – you’re not just staying somewhere unusual, you’re actually living temporarily in this wild volcanic landscape that feels both ancient and alive.
Apartments in Hawaii provide travelers with an authentic local experience, allowing them to shop at traditional farmers markets and cook with fresh ingredients from the renowned Hawaiian culinary traditions.

This is the weirdest and most amazing place I have ever stayed. The lava field was incredible and the house is comfortable and super cute. I can't imagine spending two weeks there but for a couple of nights it was perfect. What an experience!

Tiny home on the Kalapana lava beds and the views of the lava fields in the base of Kīlauea on Hawai‘i Island.

Nice place if you want to have an experience staying on a lava field. The sky was full of stars at night. Near to some black sand beaches.

I love the separate bedrooms and the outdoor space. Plenty of supplies in the kitchen for cooking, making coffee/tea, etc. Appreciated having a refrigerator as well. Love the small environmental footprint of this property.
