THE OHANA HOUSE, Amazing Tiny Home on A Volcanic Lava Field! Overview

First Impressions

You know what hits you first when you arrive at THE OHANA HOUSE, Amazing Tiny Home on A Volcanic Lava Field!? It’s not just the name — though that pretty much tells you everything you need to know. This three-star tiny house literally sits on ancient lava rock in Kehena, and honestly, I’ve never stayed anywhere quite like it. The contrast between this cozy little structure and the raw, black volcanic landscape is something you have to see to believe. The property offers an extraordinary experience that combines modern comfort with the raw beauty of Hawaii’s volcanic terrain.

Location & Setting

Kehena isn’t your typical Hawaiian beach town — it’s wilder, more untouched than the resort areas most people think of. The property sits on this incredible lava field that makes you feel like you’re on another planet, but you’re actually just minutes from some of the Big Island’s most beautiful (and clothing-optional) beaches. Couples seem to really get this location — they consistently rate it over 8 out of 10, and I can see why. There’s something romantic about being tucked away in this volcanic wonderland with parking right on site, so you don’t have to worry about logistics. The unique geological setting provides endless opportunities for exploration and photography.

The Tiny House Experience

The room — well, it’s the whole house really — maximizes every square inch without feeling cramped. What impressed me most was how they’ve managed to create distinct spaces within such a compact footprint. The design feels intentional, not just thrown together like some tiny homes I’ve seen. You’ll find everything you need here, and the volcanic rock foundation actually keeps things surprisingly cool during the day. The thoughtful layout includes clever storage solutions and multi-functional furniture that makes the space feel larger than it actually is.

What Makes It Special

This place has earned a 9.5 rating from guests, and after staying here, I get it. It’s offering something completely different from typical resorts. The silence at night is incredible, broken only by the occasional sound of the ocean in the distance. During the day, you can explore the lava formations right from your doorstep, which feels like having a private geological museum. The recent guest ratings consistently hover around 8.7 for location, and that makes sense when you realize you’re staying somewhere most people only see in documentaries.

Why Guests Love It

I mean, where else can you wake up on a lava field and still have all the comforts of a well-designed tiny home? The free private parking might seem like a small detail, but it matters when you’re in a remote area like this. What really sets this place apart is how it connects you to the Big Island’s volcanic landscape without sacrificing comfort. It’s perfect for couples looking for something memorable — not just another hotel room with a view, but an actual experience that becomes part of your Hawaii story. The combination of unique location and thoughtful amenities creates an unforgettable stay.

Apartments in Hawaii provide travelers with an authentic local experience, allowing them to shop at traditional farmers markets and cook with fresh ingredients from the renowned Hawaiian culinary traditions.

This is the weirdest and most amazing place I have ever stayed. The lava field was incredible and the house is comfortable and super cute. I can't imagine spending two weeks there but for a couple of nights it was perfect. What an experience!

Tiny home on the Kalapana lava beds and the views of the lava fields in the base of Kīlauea on Hawai‘i Island.

  • Mohamad from Singapore (9/10)

Nice place if you want to have an experience staying on a lava field. The sky was full of stars at night. Near to some black sand beaches.

  • Karolina from United States (10/10)

I love the separate bedrooms and the outdoor space. Plenty of supplies in the kitchen for cooking, making coffee/tea, etc. Appreciated having a refrigerator as well. Love the small environmental footprint of this property.
