Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to the Ritz-Carlton Maui in Kapalua – I mean, you hear “Ritz-Carlton” and sometimes think stuffy, right? But this place actually feels more like a sophisticated beach house that just happens to have incredible service. The moment you walk through that open-air lobby, you get hit with this perfect mix of plumeria-scented air and ocean breeze that makes you immediately forget whatever stress you brought from the mainland.

What really sets this property apart from the other luxury resorts on the island is its location on that quieter northwest side of Maui. You’re not dealing with the Wailea crowds here – Kapalua has this more intimate, almost residential feel where you’ll see locals surfing at D.T. Fleming Beach (which is literally right there) mixed in with resort guests. The golf courses are stunning, sure, but you know what I love? How they’ve managed to keep so much of the natural landscape intact. You’ll spot Hawaiian hoary bats at dusk if you’re paying attention, and the tide pools near the beach are actually worth exploring with kids – or honestly, just by yourself.

The rooms feel appropriately luxurious without being over the top, though I will say the ocean view suites are worth the splurge if you can swing it. There’s something about waking up to that particular shade of blue that Kapalua Bay turns in the morning light… it’s different from other parts of the island, maybe because of how protected the bay is. Service-wise, they nail that Ritz-Carlton attention to detail – your preferences get remembered, the staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there (always a good sign), and check-in was smooth even during what the front desk manager mentioned was their busy season in February. The spa is solid, the restaurants are better than they need to be for a captive resort audience, and parking is handled by valet which – let’s be real – you want when you’re dealing with rental cars and trying to look somewhat put-together. It’s definitely a splurge, but the kind where you feel like you’re getting what you pay for rather than just paying for a name.
