Hotel Description
You know what hit me first about The Surfjack? It’s got this retro-cool vibe that actually feels authentic instead of trying too hard – which honestly is rare in Waikiki these days. The whole mid-century modern thing works here because they didn’t go overboard with it. Walking into the lobby, there’s this laid-back surf culture aesthetic with vintage boards on the walls and these amazing terrazzo floors that somehow don’t feel cold under your feet.
The pool area is where this place really shines, and I mean that literally – the way the afternoon light hits that turquoise water is pretty spectacular. It’s not huge, but it doesn’t need to be. There’s something intimate about it that makes you feel like you’re at a friend’s really cool house party rather than some massive resort. The music they play is spot-on too, never too loud but always something that fits the mood. I spent way more time lounging there than I planned, watching people drift in and out. The crowd tends to be younger professionals and couples, not really a family scene if that matters to you.
What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to capture that old-school Hawaiian hotel charm without feeling dated. The rooms have this clean, minimalist thing going on with pops of coral and turquoise that somehow don’t feel cheesy. The beds are actually comfortable – you’d be surprised how many boutique hotels miss that basic requirement. My room faced the courtyard, which meant it was pretty quiet at night, though you’ll still hear some street noise if you’re a really light sleeper. The shower pressure was solid, and they stock this local soap that smells incredible, sort of like plumeria but not overwhelming.
Location-wise, you’re right in the heart of things but on a slightly quieter stretch. You can walk to the beach in about three minutes, and there’s this great little coffee spot around the corner that locals actually go to – always a good sign. The front desk staff genuinely seemed to know the area well, not just the tourist stuff. When I asked about good poke that wasn’t touristy, the guy didn’t hesitate before giving me specific directions to this place that ended up being perfect.
I’ll be honest, it’s not cheap, but for a 4-star in this area with this much personality, the rates felt fair. The whole experience felt curated without being pretentious, if that makes sense. It’s the kind of place where you might end up chatting with interesting people by the pool or discovering your new favorite drink at their little bar area. Sometimes hotels try so hard to be everything to everyone that they end up being nothing special – The Surfjack definitely doesn’t have that problem.

The location is incredible. Located minutes away to all that we needed. Every evening there is a live performers with some great music and bar. The room was tidy and spacious and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Will definitely book again once in Honolulu

Honolulu is a busy city. The Surfjack is in a great location as it’s just a block away from the first of 2 main roads. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the beach. So you are away from the noise but so close! The staff are great. It’s a super cute boutique-style hotel. The owner is always there with his bulldog who will roll around and play with you if you stop in at his unit. The best part for me is the Cafe. It’s not expensive by Honolulu standards and is perfect for a quick breakfast before heading out. The lattes are delish. Also the hotel offers free coffee every morning in the lobby.

Loved the decor and retro vibe. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean and bed comfy. Good location to walk/bus everywhere. Thought it was great value for money compared to larger chains. On-site cafe was great. Lots of live entertainment/activities on offer.

I had the one-bedroom room with a swimming pool view, and it was absolutely worth it! The room was neat, cozy, and beautifully decorated with a retro-chic vibe.
The staff, especially the wonderful Hawaiian girls at reception, were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to meet all my needs. From check-in to check-out, the service was truly impeccable.
The parking was also very attractive—both in terms of convenience and price, which is rare for Waikiki! It was such a relief not to worry about parking in such a busy area.
The overall vibe of the hotel is laid-back yet stylish, and the pool area was the perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring. I highly recommend this gem for anyone looking for an amazing stay in Waikiki. I’ll definitely be back!Jessica from United States (8/10)
