Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Wailea Grand Champions, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name sounds a bit over-the-top, you know? But this place actually delivers on what matters, especially if you’re looking for that proper Maui resort experience without the massive crowds you get at some of the mega-resorts down the coast.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep this sort of intimate vibe despite being a solid 4-star property. The grounds are gorgeous – I mean, you’re basically nestled between two championship golf courses (hence the name, I guess), and honestly, even if you don’t golf, it’s pretty spectacular to wake up to those manicured fairways stretching toward the ocean. The units themselves feel more like condos than hotel rooms, which is perfect if you’re staying more than a couple nights. I actually had a full kitchen, which saved me a fortune since eating out in Wailea every meal can get pretty pricey. The lanai was where I spent most of my mornings – there’s something about that Maui air and the way the light hits those palm trees that just makes you want to slow down.
Here’s what locals won’t tell you but you should know: the location is actually genius. You’re close enough to all the fancy Wailea resort action – the Grand Wailea, Fairmont, all those places – but you’re not paying their ridiculous rates or dealing with their crowds. The beaches down there are public anyway, so you can just stroll over to Wailea Beach or Grand Wailea’s pool area if you want that scene. Parking was never an issue, which honestly surprised me given how crazy it can get around here during peak season. The staff seemed to really know their stuff too – not just the scripted responses you get sometimes, but actual helpful tips about avoiding the tourist traps and where to catch the best sunset views. One thing I’ll mention though – if you’re expecting that high-energy resort atmosphere with activities and entertainment, this isn’t really that kind of place. It’s more laid-back, which I loved, but just know what you’re getting into. The pool area is nice but not huge, and things definitely quiet down early. For me, that was perfect after long days exploring the Road to Hana or hiking around Haleakala, but if you’re looking to party, you might want to stay closer to Kihei.
