Hotel Description
So here’s the thing about the Ala Moana Hotel – it’s one of those places that grows on you once you figure out what it’s actually about. I mean, when you first pull up, you’re not going to mistake it for some flashy Waikiki resort, but honestly? That’s kind of the point. This is a solid three-star spot that sits right in the heart of where Honolulu actually happens, not where the tourist buses dump everyone off.
The location is honestly what makes this place work. You’re literally walking distance from Ala Moana Center (which, if you haven’t been, is basically where locals actually shop instead of fighting crowds at the International Market Place), and the beach park is right there too. I actually prefer Ala Moana Beach to some of the Waikiki stretches – less crazy, better for actual swimming, and you can usually find parking without wanting to scream. The hotel itself has that sort of mid-century Hawaii vibe that feels authentic rather than manufactured, you know? The rooms are clean and functional – nothing fancy, but the AC works well and the beds are comfortable enough. What I really appreciate is that they’ve included the resort fee in their rate, so you’re not getting hit with surprise charges at checkout like some places love to do.
The staff here actually seems to know the area, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. They’ll point you toward the good plate lunch spots on Kapiolani Boulevard (seriously, there’s this place called Rainbow Drive-In that’s maybe a ten-minute walk and it’s been there forever), or tell you the best times to hit the beach park before it gets packed with weekend warriors. The hotel’s pool area is nothing spectacular, but it’s quiet during weekday mornings if you just want to float around without kids cannonballing everywhere. And here’s something practical – parking is actually reasonable here, especially compared to what you’ll pay in Waikiki proper. The 7.8 rating makes sense to me because this isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s a decent, honest hotel in a spot that lets you experience Honolulu more like someone who lives here rather than someone just passing through. If you’re the type who wants to be right in the middle of everything touristy, this might feel too quiet for you. But if you want easy access to real Hawaii – good food, actual beaches locals use, shopping that doesn’t feel like a theme park – then this place hits that sweet spot where you’re getting value without sacrificing location or cleanliness.
To book a hotel in Hawaii during the famous winter whale watching season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the islands attract tropical paradise seekers and ocean lovers from around the world.
